War Bonnet Series - Tsoi - Ruth Andre

"War Bonnet  - Tsoi"
12"x12"x.75", mixed media on panel
by Ruth Andre

Today I have taken the "War Bonnet" series a step farther. I wanted to use "War Bonnet" as the title and number each painting in the series. I have decided to follow my Cherokee kinship  and name each painting using Cherokee language numbers. Today's painting, Tsoi, is the third painting in the "War Bonnet" series. If you would like to read more about the Cherokee language Linda L. Kinyon has written a very informative article. HERE

"War Bonnet" continues to inspire making for, "A Painting Day".

War Bonnet Series - Tali - Ruth Andre

"War Bonnet - Tali"
12"x12"x.75" mixed media on panel
by Ruth Andre

The second painting in the "War Bonnet" series is "Tali", the Cherokee counting word for Two. If you would like to learn more about the Cherokee language Linda L. Kinyon has written an informative article HERE. Working with layers of paint of different colors and textures has given this painting depth and a breath of air. I want to thank all of you that left comments and sent emails to tell of your own stories and your painting process.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

War Bonnet Series - Sowo - Ruth Andre

"War Bonnet - Sowo"
12"x12"x.75 mixed media, on panel
by Ruth Andre

This painting may or may not be the beginning of a new series. I am working on change and with change there is a feeling of conflict as I paint and gather ideas to paint. I often hear artists share how they have had so much fun painting and I wonder if I am from another space station?  I do enjoy painting. I do love the paint, the color, the mixing of any color one can imagine but the actual painting is sometimes me against the inner me. I enjoy the process and I wish my inner self would just take over from the get go and get me out of the way and the whole process of painting might be fun. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Note: "War Bonnet" is a new series of works with "Sowo" being the first in the series. Each painting is named using the Counting in Cherokee words. To learn more about Counting in Cherokee, LInda L. Kinyon has written an informative article.

Passing Rain - Ruth Andre

"Passing Rain"
12"x12" mixed media on panel
by Ruth Andre

Spring and summer bring back childhood memories. This painting in particular reminds me of a time I was visiting family that lived in the hills of Kentucky when a sudden storm came through the holler.  Pots were set out to catch the rain and we all settled in under the porch to enjoy the cool breezes. When the rain had past the pots of water were gathered and we all washed our hair with the rain water. I thought it was a bit crazy at the time but came to understand that rain water is like a spa treatment for the hair. Memories of the old ways have made for, "A Painting Day".

Yesterday and today have been days of experimentation, taking a new look at how I apply paint to convey an image. My intention was to have the three panels work well as a triptych as well as individually.

Rushing Creek - Ruth Andre

"Rushing Creek"
6"x18"x1.5" mixed media on panel - triptych
by Ruth Andre

Painting small panels and in this case a triptych, lets me experiment with color and design. It is a break of sorts from painting the larger works. My mind is buzzing with new painting ideas. It has been a good day and, "A Painting Day".

Stoney Point - Ruth Andre

"Stoney Point"
36x36x2 inches, mixed media on panel
by Ruth Andre

Today's painting depicts a feeling rather than an actual place. There are times when we need a quite place, one were we can just think and conger.  My days have been full as of late so maybe painting "Stoney Point" is a painted secret place? It has been, "A Painting Day".

Border Crossing - Ruth Andre

"Border Crossing"
36"x36"x2", oil on panel
by Ruth Andre

There are natural boundaries such as water ways that criss cross our country. It is most interesting to travel by car across the United States and feel and see the diversity of each state. There is often a  natural water way or a mountain range that separates one state from another. The land was pioneered and surveyed using nature for its compass. Thinking of our great land has made for, "A Painting Day".

Laguna - Ruth Andre

"Laguna"
36"x36"x2" oil-wax on panel
by Ruth Andre

I have been painting the last few days on a larger work. Changing to a larger size panel is challenging, giving way to new thinking on how to apply the paint. I have had to mix larger amounts of paint using a bigger palette for mixing colors. My tools for applying the paint are larger as well.  Finding the voice of my vision while working out the mechanics of painting has made for, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Tip - Ruth Andre

  "VIDEO"

Today's post is a little different. My son was taking a tour of my studio and when he saw that I  use ChicWrap, his invention, to keep my paints fresh he had to make a short video with me using ChicWrap. Believe me I would rather be having, "A Painting Day".

River Walk - Ruth Andre

"River Walk"
12x8 inches, oil-wax on panel - diptych
by Ruth Andre

While my son and grandson were here visiting we drove a few miles south to the Mokelumne River for a picnic. The dark shadows from the pines were showering their reflection over the water. The sun shown down on the water and rocks making a brilliant display. The river was so beautiful and made for " A Painting Day".
