Sunday was one of those perfect winter days. The air was crisp and the sun was shining. It felt so good to be outside. I met up with a group of painters, The Sacramento Plein Air Painting Group, for a day at the Delta in farm country. Martha Esch coordinated the group's meeting and she did an outstanding job giving us direction, taking photos and giving much encouragement. The outing title was, "Paint the Old Barn" but when I got to the sight all I wanted to paint was the long view of the field tree line. I wanted to capture the beauty of the long view and the almost smokey view to the trees. It was good to get out side and enjoy the company of other artists. Below is the inspiration photo and a group photo of a few of the painters gathered together at the end of the painting session. It was definitely, "A Painting Day".

PS: If you notice I am holding one more tree line painting and it was given as a thank-you to the very kind farmer for letting us use his farm for the day.

Summer Rain - Ruth Andre

Riding horseback with friends in Missouri we would often times find ourselves caught in a summer storm. Each rider usually carried rain gear but no matter how hard we tired by the time we got back to the horse trailers we were wet. It felt good but quite dangerous being out in a lightening storm surrounded by tall trees. One afternoon there were five of us riders huddled together in my trailer tack area having lunch. The unexpected made for a fun day and "A Painting Day".

Ice Storm - Ruth Andre

I remember the first ice storm we had on the farm in Missouri. I was in awe with the beauty of the ice covered trees and horrified at the bent tree branches, heavy with ice. What to do? I learned you just had to let nature takes it course and hope for the best. We had many ice storms to follow and each winter there was a skating rink of slip and slide on the ground as I tried to walk from the house to the barn. These memories have made for, "A Painting Day".

Impending Storm

I believe this is a time of transition for me and my painting. Abstract art is a true love of mine and in years past my art was done with paint and a squeegee making serigraph prints. I loved the printing process and the fine papers, inks and making multiples print runs. I left printing behind and have explored many aspects of art in the past years. The last few paintings maybe bringing my love of the landscape and abstract painting together? Not sure where this will lead but I am willing to follow.

Yesterday I sat out on the back porch with my husband sharing stores of the day. We looked out onto the pasture and the trees running along the creek. The wind was blowing through the trees and the air changed from warm to cold. We realized an impending storm was on its way. We hurried into the house but the feeling of the storm stayed with me, making for, "A Painting Day".
