A Painting Day - Fences - Ruth Andre

"Fences"
4.5"x4.5" oil & cold wax on paper
by Ruth Andre
Challenge Painting Five

The valley where I live is cow country. I have learned over the years how important fences are to the rancher with cows. The herd is not safe without strong fencing. I have also learned that keeping the fences in service takes diligence and work. Watching in the distance out my dining room window one day I saw a huge black Angus Bull walk right through what looked like a good fence. He ducked his head between the top wire and then pushed the bottom fencing down as he walked from field to the dirt road. I am sure he was a gentle guy but there is no way I would want to meet up with him on the road via car or on foot. He was a big fellow. My neighbor has been ranching in the valley for 40 years and she works hard to keep her ranch in shape. The painting above, "Fencing" was inspired by walking the fence line on my daily walks up into the hills behind our home. Enjoy Challenge Painting Five.

A Painting Day - After the Tide - Ruth Andre

"After the Tide"
4.5"x4.5" Oil & Cold Wax on Paper

Challenge Painting Four

While in Malibu I saw the ocean everyday and at different times of the day. The tide would be high and then when the tide receded the sand was wet and dark grey.  I loved seeing the ebb and flow of the ocean waves. My senses were totally alive with the sights and sounds of the coastal landscape.
Enjoy Challenge Painting Three.

A Painting Day - Cloud Crossing - Ruth Andre

"Cloud Crossing"

Challenge Painting Three

Today I was out in the horse pasture collecting fallen oak tree limbs and picking up any large rocks that came down into the valley during the last big rain. The grass is high but will soon be mowed. As I stood in the field I could see a distant cloud coming my way. The whites of the clouds and the tall grasses were the inspiration for this challenge painting number three. It was, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Yellow Sky - Ruth Andre

"Yellow Sky"
4.5"x4.5" Oil on Paper

Challenge Painting Two

We think of the sky being blue but is it? Sometimes it is blue but so much of the time it is pink, purple, pink and at sunset it is filled with bright reds and orange and yes, yellow. Here in the valley I can see the sun's yellow hues as it falls behind the high mountains in the west. The beauty is there for all to see.  This is Day Two for my Challenge to paint 100 small paintings on paper. Thank-you for following along. It has been, "A Painting Day"

Challenge Painting One

While painting for the new online video workshops I painted two small paintings on paper. This painting, "Lagoon" is one I painted after visiting a beautiful lagoon in Malibu, California. It was a quite lagoon just a short walk from the ocean shore. I would also like to announce that this is the first of a series of small paintings on paper. I hope to paint 100 paintings as a challenge for myself. I am also in the process of ordering mats for these paintings on paper and will be offering the paintings matted and sleeved or matted with a frame. Photos will be coming soon. Enjoy and follow along for the
Painting Challenge 100.

A Painting Day - Lazy Day - Ruth Andre

"Lazy Day"
9"x9"x1.5" Oil & Mixed Media on Cradled Panel
by Ruth Andre
Sold

My visit to the Los Angeles area included a good week in Malibu, California. There is something so special about being on the coast and seeing the ocean and feeling the sea breezes. It is magical and made me just want to grab a hammock and spend a lazy day in the sun.

Malibu Coast in May

Wishing and doing are two different things because I spent my time working on two new DVD videos. The whole video making process was challenging and tons of fun. The focus for each video is on how to find the inspiration to paint that which is meaningful to the artist. Following how I find my inspiration will hopefully help others find their own inspiration. I show how to bring found inspiration back to the studio to paint what is true to your own heart. The painting, "Lazy Day" in this post is a demonstration painting I did for the first video. I will send an update in a future post when the DVD videos are available. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Workshop - Ruth Andre

"Title Wave"
4"x4"x.75" oil & cold wax on cradled panel
by Ruth Andre
$75 plus $10 shipping

I had the opportunity to teach a small Oil & Wax Workshop over the week-end. The workshop was held in a borrowed studio in Malibu, California and the class focused on Finding Inspiration for painting. I am often asked how I find my painting inspiration and thought I would share the tools I use. My fearless students were NOT artists but professional women working in accounting and banking. At the end of the day I was truly inspired.  The students were able to take what inspires them and translate that inspiration into what they love with their paintings. The class was a lot of fun and I thought the class paintings were beautifully done. It was truly, "A Painting Day"
