Memories - Ruth Andre

"Memories"
7"x7" Acrylic-Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

This has been another busy week. The days are flying by. I just want to sit out on the back porch and enjoy the view. I did get to the studio yesterday and it felt so good to try a new painting approach. I started by using a graphite pencil and then filling in with large color acrylic shapes. The veiling of white oil and wax was the final layer. I like the contrast of the pale white and strong color shapes.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

Nest - Five and Six - Ruth Andre

"Nest- Five and Six"
Acrylic on 9"x12"Paper
Each painting can be matted and framed together or separately

The "Nest" paintings are growing in numbers and each one has its own story. You will see in these two painting the Blue lines traveling through the paintings. The found nest had blue baling twine woven in and around the oak branches. I could not resist adding the vibrant blue color in these two nest paintings. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Totem - Mesa I and II - Ruth Andre

Totem - Messa I and II"
1.25"x12" Oil-Wax on Paper
Matted and Framed 5"x16"
by Ruth Andre

This is the start of a new series of works that have brought true joy to the studio. I hear artists say, oh, it was fun painting this or that but in this case it is true. I have been thinking, Paint Big, but left that all behind to start this series of Totems. The Totems are symbols of what I have lived and see. The project has been in progress for a few days so be prepared to see the Totem series as each piece is completed.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

Drift - Ruth Andre

"Drift"
4"x14" Oil-Wax on Canvas
by Ruth Andre

The breeze came from the west while walking this morning. The change of seasons is here. The trees are turning golden and losing their leaves. It is thrilling to feel the coolness of autumn in the air. I had started this painting, "Drift", a few days ago. It is painted on flat primed canvas. I think I will have it matted and framed showing the lovely canvas rather than having it stretched on wooden bars. I love the look of the canvas peeking around the painting. Life felt very mellow today with no appointments to run. It was a day to drift and enjoy. It was also, "A Painting Day".

The Back Door - Ruth Andre

"The Back Door"
6"x10" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

Every summer when my kids were growing up we would take a summer vacation to Falling Leaf Lake in Tahoe, California. The old summer cottages were quite rustic. The kitchen had an old vintage stove, a small refrigerator and a table covered with a plastic floral cloth. There was a patio and a back door with a screen that would slam shut with a bang when the kids went in and out of the cabin. The old door had seen many visitors and it had been painted several times. There were a few chipped areas to let  you know it was not always a green door or a yellow door but was also a red door at one time. These were happy and relaxed days away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The painting today, "The Back Door" is a strong and graphic painting with big areas of direct color. I like the strength of this piece very much. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Well Red - Ruth Andre

"Well Red"
6.5"x6.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

When we think of Minimal Art we usually think it is white, grey or black. The painting today, "Well Red" is painted in a minimal style and is definitely red and yet minimal. The color really sings and it feels warm and inviting. It has been, "A Painting Day".

The, "Shelter" paintings went to the framer today. It is always a treat to see my paintings enclosed within a frame. Once framed the paintings are then complete. I love the red in the "Shelter" series. The paintings exude warmth and energy. It has been, "A Painting Day".

The color, red, has come into my life with a vengeance. I am painting red and more red paintings. Isn't red the color of choice for so many things. It is a positive exciting color that gives off an aura that makes me happy. Enjoy! It has been, "A Painting Day".

Sky Dive - Ruth Andre

"Sky Dive"
12"x12" Acrylic on Paper
by Ruth Andre

This painting is soothing to the eye and reminds me of late afternoon clouds that flood the valley sky. The pink clouds signal the day's end with dusk to follow. It is a beautiful and fleeting time to enjoy the quiet of the valley. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Save the Day - Ruth Andre

"Save the Day"
12"x12" Acrylic on Paper
by Ruth Andre

This painting got into the studio save box but not the blog so here it is a few weeks since it was completed. We had a rash of very hot days and finally a few clouds passed over the valley. The overcast sky was a gift giving some relief from the last hot days of summer. There was hope in seeing the clouds that rain might follow. It was a, "Save the Day" painting for sure.

Summer Lost - Ruth Andre

Summer Lost
12"x12" Acrylic on Arches Paper
by Ruth Andre
NFS

It was a busy day yesterday. First my husband and I drove about 4 hours getting materials to fix the horse shelter. Of course there was cooking and the normal chores that needed to be done. A lady neighbor helped my husband get the new shelter roof in place and I did my best to sneak in some painting. I worked on the painting above and decided to take a break. My mistake was going back to the studio and was seemingly on a mission to make a change to the painting. One thing moved on to more changes until the painting was lost. Darn is a nice way of saying SHOOT, DADGUM-IT and all the rest. Sometimes it is best to let something be than to hover over it and try and change it. Is that so true of so many things in life. I am sharing "Summer Lost" with you because I like the painting and it reveals the end of summer. The cloud like images might be the clouds that were forming outside announcing the coming rain. The painting is gone but the day is remembered. It has been,
"A Painting Day".

Roadblock - Ruth Andre

"Roadblock"
5"x5" Oil and Mixed Media on Paper
by Ruth Andre

My husband just returned from a driving trip across country. He had many stories to tell since he was away for five weeks. On his way home traffic was stopped in Texas due to a sand storm. A detour was set up that took him over hill and dale on a windy two lane road. You can only imagine the traffic and the sandy landscape. I must have been thinking about the Texas adventure when I painted this painting. I can feel the wildness of the open land.

Solace - Ruth Andre

"Solace"
7"x7" Oil and Mixed Media on Paper
by Ruth Andre

There is so much to say about being free and able to enjoy a few minutes or even a full day of solace. It is a time to think, maybe even reflect and hear your own unspoken words. I find slowing down or  stopping in place can bring new ideas and new thinking. Take a moment to enjoy the solace.

Through the Rain - Ruth Andre

"Through the Rain"
5"x5" Oil and Mixed Media on Paper
Without Mat $98
With Mat- $125
by Ruth Andre

Looking out the studio window I can see rain clouds in the distance. Then the rush of wind buffets its way through the valley and finally the rain comes pelting down on the studio's metal roof. The landscape with the lush spring colors seem to slide down the glass as the rain showers the land.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Snow Days II - Ruth Andre

"Snow Days II"
4.5"x4.5" Oil and Mixed Media on Paper
12"x12" Mat Included
Challenge Painting
by Ruth Andre
$125.00

The cold front has arrived and it was just 18-degrees here this morning. I know that is not cold for a lot of you out there but I was raised in southern California and anything below 30-degrees is still cold to me. The down jacket and padded cover pants are now ready for wear.
My paintings, "Snow Days I and II" are my interruption of the valley covered in morning frost. Winter is here.  I hope your Thanksgiving Day was a special time filled with good friends and good food.

"Seasons Fall-I"

"Seasons Fall-II"
by Ruth Andre

Fall is here and the temperatures have dropped considerably. All that means is I am already feeling cold and am looking to unpack the padded over pants and heavier jackets when heading out the door. I find myself wanting to stay in the kitchen and cook. I have taken on all sorts of new recipes using fall vegetables. Baking sweet treats is also something I enjoy. The best dessert so far has been a Chocolate Chip and Raspberry Cake. I know it sounds so good and it was. Today I got to the studio, warmed it up and started painting. I love fall so I started a "Seasons" series with fall being number one. It has been, "A Painting Day".
