"My Cayenne"

How long has it been?  This painting of my horse, Cayenne, has been in my studio just waiting for the final touches for the past few months.  I think today I can say it is completed.  The composition being long and thin is rather fun and and gives a contemporary feel to this piece.  Cayenne was born and raised on our farm in Missouri.  I remember sleeping on hay bales to watch over her the first night after her arrival.  It was an exciting time and I think for the first two months of Cay's life I watched her none stop.    I would go to the pasture with the horses and just watch Cay run and play and then watch her napping in the paddock while her mother, Angel, grazed leaving her aunt Mystery to watch over her.   Having Cayenne in my life made for "A Painting Day".

"Grey"

Today's painting is of a wild grey filly and is painted in memory of Jean M. Auel and her Earth's Children series of books.  I just finished reading "The Land of the Painted Caves", the final book of the series, and was totally fascinated once again reading about the people and events that happened 30,000 years ago.  The first book of the series is "Clan of the Cave Bear" and it is a book I have kept in my memory as a great adventure.  In "The Land of the Painted Caves" there is a horse named Grey and I wanted to paint this little filly.  I am sure horses were stockier in build than my painting of Grey but it made for "A Special Painting Day" to think of Grey and her story while I painted her today.  Enjoy!

This little Paint was painted from a reference photo taken by Judi Zoboll.  Judi has a wonderful artistic eye and when I saw her series of Paint horse photos I really wanted to paint them.  Meeting Judi made for, "A Painting Day".

Foothill Oaks

I have been away from the studio for a few days.  There is a lot going on in my life right now and getting to the studio today was a pleasure very much missed.  I did not feel like jumping in to paint a large work or one that felt realistic, so out came a good size brush and a few bold colors.  It was a great warming up session and I feel like getting back to work won't be so hard for "A Painting Day".

"Spring" & Moses Botkin Challenge

Each month the Moses Botkin Challenge group picks a subject or a technique for the group to paint.  This month Robin Cheers chose the Challenge.  She asked each artist to make a painting using only 15 brushstrokes.  I have to say I dragged my feet on this challenge but once I got started, what fun I had.  The little landscape above is very close to 15 strokes and I learned it is hard to count and paint at the same time.  I used a palette knife since it seemed to be what was needed to get the paint to go where I wanted it to go.  The paint was moving fast and made for, "A Painting Day".  The other paintings for the Moses Botkin Challenge are shown below.  Enjoy!

"Playmate"

This little painting was an absolute ball to paint.  I used a palette knife and lots and lots of paint.  The style is quite a departure from my more realistic painting and I found it a great way to warm up and start thinking color and shape.  Finding the palette knife made for, "A Painting Day".

Two Books-Mine & A Friend's

First I want to say artists sometimes enjoy different forms of art.  We usually move to a medium that means the most to us and we take our art to a higher level with daily work.  On occasion it is fun to venture from our known path and work in a different style or different medium.  The book above is my first book and it is a collection of iPhone Finger Paintings called "Woven In Time".  My son, gave me an iPhone a few years ago along with the app, "Doodle Buddy".  I was enthralled with the wild designs that could be made with just a touch of the finger on the iPhone screen.  I decided to gather these works together in a book for safe keeping.  The forward was a bit of a surprise and it tells much about me and how this book came to be.  We are today what we have lived.  Taking on the iPhone made for, "A Painting Day".
If you would like to have a preview of these little abstracted woven forms click, "Woven In Time"

An artist friend and fellow Daily Painter Originals blog group member, Carol Nelson,  just announced she has a new book, "Geologic Abstractions".  I think you will totally enjoy Carol's vivid abstract works.  Each work is unique unto itself with a close-up detail photo to give a closer look at her beautiful paintings.  Each page of Carol's new book is to be enjoyed.  Click  "Geologic Abstractions" to see a preview.

Star Buck

This is a painting I finished awhile back.  It is of a Texas Longhorn steer.  Star Buck lives on a small cattle ranch here in the foothills.  Meeting Star Buck was a bit of a shock and surprise.  I was out taking photos on the ranch when I heard a terrible noise and then Star Buck appeared running at full speed.  Luckily I had the camera ready and got a few photos as he ran past me to the new shipment of Herfords that had just arrived.  I guess you can say he was most interested in the new neighbors.  It was a thrill to see this big guy but an even bigger thrill to see him run past me and not over me.  I do love Texas Longhorn Cattle and seeing Star Buck made for, "A Painting Day".

The April 2011 Calendar is ready to add to your monthly collection.  The painting is "Bison Bull" and this big guy was a thrill to paint.  As the paint went on the 36x36-inch canvas the studio filled with his majestic gaze.  Painting this wild bison made for, "A Painting Day".
