It Came From the North - Ruth Andre

"It Came From the North"
30"x22.5" Acrylic on Paper
by Ruth Andre

Vignettes for, "It Came From the North"

Summer is here but I am still thinking about the northern states we visited just a few weeks ago. Montana, Wyoming and Idaho were all so beautiful. I was constantly being reminded that we were visiting during the warm days of summer and I was told it does get very cold in winter. I have tried to imagine six months of wintery days with lots of snow after living in California most of my life.  There would definitely be a few challenges.
Even in our isolated northern California valley we do occasionally get a wild storm and we always check to see if the storm is coming from the west or the east. The eastern storms seem to have stronger winds.

The painting today is painted on Stonehenge paper using acrylic paints. For the life of me I cannot get a true color image of the entire paintings so that is why you see three small vignettes of the painting that are truer to the  cooler palette.  I may try photographing the painting again tomorrow in the morning light. I just looked at the vignettes once again and I like the  #3 cropped view. It may become its own painting some day. It has been, "A Painting Day".

White Fish - Ruth Andre

"White Fish"
8x10x1.5 inches, oil-wax on panel
by Ruth Andre

Today was filled with surprises and with each piece of good news it became harder and harder to concentrate and paint. I started two small paintings this morning with a very clear vision. Those paintings turned into two different paintings when I returned to my studio after lunch. Then those two paintings changed again as I made one change and then another. The harder I tried to stay focused on what was in my mind the less the paint seemed to move in that direction. Amazing how mind and hand have their own path. With all of that said I have to share with you that I have always wanted to go to Montana. Once a few years back I heard of a town called, Whitefish, and the name brought many thoughts to mind. One day I will head north and visit this most interesting state, Montana and enjoy its splendor. It has certainly been, "A Painting Day".

HIgh Country Bison - Ruth Andre

I finished this Bison painting today and thought it might be a stronger painting cropped down to showcase the Bison. The canvas is 9x12" and the cropped version would have been 8x10". Then I let the painting sit for a little bit and added a frame to take another look and decided it works as it is. The frame brought the painting together by enclosing the image. I cannot say enough about good painting frames and good framers. Each step adds to the beautify of your paintings. Painting the wild Bison made for "A Painting Day".

Calendar for April, 2011

The April 2011 Calendar is ready to add to your monthly collection.  The painting is "Bison Bull" and this big guy was a thrill to paint.  As the paint went on the 36x36-inch canvas the studio filled with his majestic gaze.  Painting this wild bison made for, "A Painting Day".
