HIgh Country Bison - Ruth Andre

I finished this Bison painting today and thought it might be a stronger painting cropped down to showcase the Bison. The canvas is 9x12" and the cropped version would have been 8x10". Then I let the painting sit for a little bit and added a frame to take another look and decided it works as it is. The frame brought the painting together by enclosing the image. I cannot say enough about good painting frames and good framers. Each step adds to the beautify of your paintings. Painting the wild Bison made for "A Painting Day".

Painting Day

You have heard of 'Group Therapy' well this is a post to get me kicked into gear.  I have had this little 48x60 inch painting in the works for way too long and it needs to be finished so it can find a home.  I am counting on the good folks that follow my blog to gently get me moving.  I have had my excuses of course on why this one has not made the finish line.  One reason being not knowing what I wanted to do with the background?  I think I have it figured out so the only thing to do now is to paint.  Being in the thinking mode has made for, "A Painting Day".

Calendar for April, 2011

The April 2011 Calendar is ready to add to your monthly collection.  The painting is "Bison Bull" and this big guy was a thrill to paint.  As the paint went on the 36x36-inch canvas the studio filled with his majestic gaze.  Painting this wild bison made for, "A Painting Day".

Elk

This is a busy time of year for most artists.  We are entering shows and painting for coming shows and submitting portfolios to galleries in hopes of winning the favor of a judge or gallery owner.  The painting today is of an elk for the Elk Foundation.  With each new animal I paint there is a learning curve.  The nuance of the facial features is so different with each animal and the Elk was a mighty big boy to paint.  Please enjoy "A Painting Day".

Montana Blue

The studio is buzzing today with several paintings in different stages of completion.  Cooper is waiting patiently for his next coat of color.  I had an idea in my head and just had to give it a try. Sometimes you cannot wait to work efficiently you just go for it.  I wanted to push myself out of my subtle color palette and see what it would be like to paint something a bit wild.  I am experimenting and plan to send this painting on to be judged for a show in Albuquerque.  Going a bit Wild has made for, "A Painting Day".

The Loner

Today the painting is of a lone bison bull on the prairie in North Dakota.  It reminds me of what it must of been like when small bands of buffalo survived the ravages of extinction during our settlement years in the late 1800's.  The brave and proud buffalo roamed the land, their land.

I also have an update on my mare, Angel.  The vet was here yesterday to say at best Angel may see shadows but be basically blind in the injured eye.  It was hard news after over 2 months of care and medicating the eye.  We still have weeks ahead of us before this sagais over.  Thank-you for all the messages of support.

The Great White

The white buffalo is revered as being a sacred symbol to many Indian tribes. It is awe inspiring to see a white buffalo. I can only imagine what it must of been like to see a great white buffalo surrounded by the dark brown hides of the others in the herd living wild on the plains. The white buffalo has special meaning to me. I have felt its spiritual essence. Seeing the Great White made for, "A Painting Day".

Shaman

This has been an exciting week. I have been able to get out and photograph horses and buffalo in Southern California. There will be paintings coming soon from this very fun trip. Today's painting is a handsome buffalo. As I was painting this piece, I felt the image come alive with every stroke. With the spirit of the buffalo in mind, I named him "Shaman" and it made for, "A Painting Day".

Bison Bull

I must have vacation fever. I so much want to jump in the truck and take off for Wyoming and take in the Yellowstone National Park. Buffalo would be my first and greatest interest but being in the high country of Wyoming would be spectacular. The painting today is Bison Bull and he is a big guy on a big canvas, 36x36-inches. He has a most curious expression. His eye is letting me know, he is very much aware of what is around him. Painting Bison Bull, made for, "A Painting Day".

Careful

The vacation season is here and this painting is a friendly warning to be careful of the Bison, at the National Parks. They are big animals and from what the locals say, they are twitchy, or unpredictable. The reference photo for this portrait was taken by Jill Maguire. Jill and Dan O'Brian raise buffalo on their ranch, Wild Idea Buffalo Company, in South Dakota. Their website is quite informative and Jill has some great recipes to share. file:///Users/Ruth/Desktop/wildideabuffalo.com:.webloc
