The River Road - Ruth Andre

"The River Road"
Oil-Wax on 9"x12" Paper
by Ruth Andre
$450

The valley is alive with bright green hills and the creek is like a river with water rushing and meandering along the road that we take to town. It seems as if everything is alive and thankful for the sunshine giving warmth to the landscape. Spring is the season for renewal and as always it is most welcomed. It has been,
"A Painting Day".

Black and White Four - Ruth Andre

"Black and White Series - Four"
Each Painting - 3"x3" Oil-Wax on Paper
Matted & Framed $150
by Ruth Andre

"Black and White I"

"Black and White II"

"Black and White III"

"Black and White IV"

These paintings were done for an online class I am taking with Nancy Hillis. Our assignment was to paint high contrast value paintings. It was suggested we paint small works and a lot of them. The "Black and White" paintings were painted with black and transparent white oil mixed with wax. The two layers merged making a lovely blue cast. I will be adding more small value paintings in the next few weeks. They are way too much fun to stop painting them.

Nest - Five and Six - Ruth Andre

"Nest- Five and Six"
Acrylic on 9"x12"Paper
Each painting can be matted and framed together or separately

The "Nest" paintings are growing in numbers and each one has its own story. You will see in these two painting the Blue lines traveling through the paintings. The found nest had blue baling twine woven in and around the oak branches. I could not resist adding the vibrant blue color in these two nest paintings. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Plate Series - Blue Plate Special - Ruth Andre

"Plate Series - Blue Plate Special"
11"x11" Acrylic on Torn Paper
Painting Matted and Framed 18"x18"
by Ruth Andre
$450

I  have had a couple of inquiries about yesterday's posted plate painting. The Plate Series of paintings were painted on heavy watercolor paper that was sealed with gesso before adding the acrylic paint. The backing is not a paper plate. I appreciate the inquires. The holiday activities are often centered around food and beautiful place settings. The Plate Series reminds me of fun and happy times with family and friends.

Plate Series - Cake Plate - Ruth Andre

"Plate Series - Cake Plate"
11"x11" Acrylic on Torn Paper
Matted & Framed 18"x18"
by Ruth Andre
$450

Sometimes an artist needs to go off the reservation and just have a day to try a new technique or a new idea. The studio is a laboratory of sorts and when the door closes it is time for experimenting. The Paper Plate series was started a few years ago and while looking through the studio archives I found the long lost paintings and thought I would share them with you. The painting, "Cake Plate", is matted and framed. I love the whimsy and playfulness of this sweet plate. Send me a set for Christmas-please!

Drift - Ruth Andre

"Drift"
4"x14" Oil-Wax on Canvas
by Ruth Andre

The breeze came from the west while walking this morning. The change of seasons is here. The trees are turning golden and losing their leaves. It is thrilling to feel the coolness of autumn in the air. I had started this painting, "Drift", a few days ago. It is painted on flat primed canvas. I think I will have it matted and framed showing the lovely canvas rather than having it stretched on wooden bars. I love the look of the canvas peeking around the painting. Life felt very mellow today with no appointments to run. It was a day to drift and enjoy. It was also, "A Painting Day".

Sideward Glance - Ruth Andre

"Sideward Glance"
Each Painting 4.5"x4.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

My escape to the studio was a two part adventure today. I was able to paint this morning and then again late afternoon. It works well when I give the paintings time to rest before adding more layers of paint. I also get to see the painting with a fresh eye or in this case a sideward glance. If there are two eyes here in these paintings it is truly abstracted but the name came to me as I finished the two works so I am going to go with it.  It has been, "A Painting Day".

The Sun Is Out - Ruth Andre

"The Sun Is Out"
6.5"x6.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

This painting was once white and blue with a hint of yellow. I thought it looked nice but it did  not jolt any strong feelings so I let it sit for a few days. Today after feeding our sweet mare, Hopi, I went to the studio to see what could  be changed for a stronger painting. It had been a safe painting and now it is a painting that makes me know it is alive. It has a pulse. I am laughing at myself a little but it is true. While living in Encinitas, California the ocean was out my front door. Every morning I would walk to the front windows and look out to see the ocean. The fog was often my sad reward but then as the morning went on I would call to my husband and say, The Sun Is Out. It was a glorious time living by the sea but short lived. We left sunny California to farm in the Mid-West for several years. My morning view changed from  ocean blues and greens to green and yellow wheat fields as the season changed. I must admit it was a cultural shock but one I soon grew to love.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

Stop Ahead - Ruth Andre

"Stop Ahead"
6"x10" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

I was thinking about snow once again while painting, "Stop Ahead". The painting makes me think of snow covered walk ways and the swishing sound of cars streaming by. It could be a small one-stop-sign-town or a busy city street. No matter the location there is a feeling of quiet isolation.

Snow Trail - Ruth Andre

"Snow Trail"
7"x7" Acrylic on Paper
by Ruth Andre

It is quite hot here in Northern California. We are experiencing another heat wave. I am thinking the last heat wave may not have ended. Thoughts of cooler temperatures must be guiding my way in the studio today. Taking a snow trail and listening to the quiet of the snow covered trail sounds quite lovely right now. I have always wanted to try cross country skiing, but never have. It would be a wonderful way to see the back country's snow-covered trails in winter.

Shelter I - Ruth Andre

"Shelter I"
4.5"x4.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
Matted and Framed 12"x12"
by Ruth Andre

The, "Shelter" paintings went to the framer today. It is always a treat to see my paintings enclosed within a frame. Once framed the paintings are then complete. I love the red in the "Shelter" series. The paintings exude warmth and energy. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Shelter II - Ruth Andre

"Shelter II"
4.5"x4.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
Matted & Framed 12"x12"
by Ruth Andre

The series continues with, "Shelter II". Thanks go out to those that sent comments regarding,
"Shelter III". I was asked what I thought of the color red. As with all colors red has its moods and moments. Seeing red on a Merry-Go-Round painted horse flying by is exciting and fun. Seeing a red STOP sign is a serious matter. Red is the color of passion and I believe most artists have passion for the work that they do. No one is forcing an artist to paint or sculpt. We do what we do because we enjoy art and it is a part of us to share with the world.
Enjoy, it has been, "A Painting Day".

Shelter III- Ruth Andre

"Shelter III"
4.5"x4.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

The color, red, has come into my life with a vengeance. I am painting red and more red paintings. Isn't red the color of choice for so many things. It is a positive exciting color that gives off an aura that makes me happy. Enjoy! It has been, "A Painting Day".

Dream Landing I - Ruth Andre

"Dream Landing I"
4.5"x4.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

I tried something a little different today and painted without painting in the formatted square but let the paint stroke stop before meeting the edge showing a loose finish. I also wanted to paint with a very quiet palette. I had moved a table to an open area in the barn to feel the cool breezes flowing through from outside. Our wild cat, Mommay Kitty, kept me company as she watched from her high perch. Take care and enjoy, it has been "A Painting Day".
PS: Dreams do come true.

Snow Bank - Ruth Andre

"Snow Pack"
6"x10" Oil and Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

Today felt like a snow day compared to last week's weather. We had cooler temperatures and it felt so good to be outside. There was no snow but this painting was influenced by my online property search for real estate in the north west. The photos are always beautiful and filled with green grass but a few photos show deep snow. I love looking at different areas for land and the homes that are offered for sale. Sometimes it makes me feel lucky to live right here in the valley.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

The Moon Over the Water - Ruth Andre

"Moon Over the Water"
4.5"x4.5" Oil-Wax on Paper
by Ruth Andre

This painting brings memories of summer nights, a full moon, and seeing the creek water rustling over the rocky creek bed. I may have needed to paint with cool colors on this very hot day hoping for a respite from the heat. Stay cool. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Creek At Night - Ruth Andre

"Creek At Night"
3.5"x4" Acrylic on Paper
Matted and Framed 11"x11"
by Ruth Andre

The temperatures have been high and with the creek still running it brings  the thirsty wildlife down from the mountains for a drink. At dusk a few days ago my dog, Sadie, and I walked to the creek to enjoy the running water and the shade from the old oaks. When I got home a neighbor called to say she saw me at the creek and when I left a mountain lion also climbed up from the creek to cross our property. I must admit I felt a chill and wondered if the mountain lion was watching Sadie and me from one of the old oak tree branches. This occurrence also made me wonder what goes on at the creek at night when all is quiet and cool. It has been, "A Painting Day".

The Grass Is Greener - Ruth Andre

"The Grass Is Greener"
6"x8" Oil on Canvas
by Ruth Andre

The grass is greener this year or at least it is staying greener due to the amazing amount of rain fall we have had. I love the blustery winds and cool weather and the cloud filled sky. It is an invigorating time to be outside enjoying the spring landscape.
It has been, "A Painting Day".
