Creek At Night - Ruth Andre

"Creek At Night"
3.5"x4" Acrylic on Paper
Matted and Framed 11"x11"
by Ruth Andre

The temperatures have been high and with the creek still running it brings  the thirsty wildlife down from the mountains for a drink. At dusk a few days ago my dog, Sadie, and I walked to the creek to enjoy the running water and the shade from the old oaks. When I got home a neighbor called to say she saw me at the creek and when I left a mountain lion also climbed up from the creek to cross our property. I must admit I felt a chill and wondered if the mountain lion was watching Sadie and me from one of the old oak tree branches. This occurrence also made me wonder what goes on at the creek at night when all is quiet and cool. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Churning Waters - Ruth Andre

"Churning Waters'
12"x12" Oil and Mixed Media on Paper
by Ruth Andre
$450.00

Over the week-end rain started falling as the storms made their way through the valley. It rained day and night leaving small waterways through the pastures down to the creek and ponds of water formed along the roadside. The creek is running with a churning force bringing the dust, silt and rocks from the creek bottom to the surface. It is as if the creek is angry and running with a new found freedom pushing its way through the landscape to not only be seen but heard. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Rising Creek - Ruth Andre

"Rising Creek"

The creek is dry right now but I cannot help but think about the coming rains and how the creek bed changes from rock and sand with leafy ferns and grasses to a powerful and beautiful water way. I think the painting, "Rising Creek" gives the feeling of how swiftly the creek water moves down its winding path through the valley.

A Painting Day - Silent Creek - Ruth Andre

The seasonal creek that runs through our property is no longer flowing. It is a sad time to see the creek bed with water captured by the rocks and blocked from continuing downstream. The sun is stealing the last bits of moisture day by day. The creek represents a life being born in the fall of the year and then passing on in early summer. The creek's short life is a reminder to me to live each day.  It is a somber time as I watch the creek disappear into the sandy creek bed.

Under the Oaks - Ruth Andre

The mornings are still very cold with the ground covered with frost. The horse's water troughs have a layer of ice that needs to be broken each morning. We seem to live in the valley's cold spot since we are so close to the creek and have shade from a high mountain. The creek water is icy but shows its colors as the light shines through the leafless oak branches.  As the water rushes through the valley, it has been,

Branch Creek - Ruth Andre

"Branch Creek"
18x12x1.5 inches oil-wax on panels
by Ruth Andre

When I was a girl my family would visit my mother's family. We would go to my grandparents two room log cabin back in a Kentucky holler. The best way to describe the holler is to say it was down a long dirt road and far from the main road to town. The house had no electricity and food was kept in a root cellar or in a bucket deep in the well to stay cool. Needless to say it was an experience to visit the wilds of Kentucky after living in California my entire life. That summer was hot and humid and we all took a walk down the red dirt road to the creek to swim. As I was resting on the shore enjoying all of the activity a Water Moccasin snake swam by. I decided right then it was just too wild for me.This painting, "Branch Creek" reminds me of that hot summer day and the all so foreign life I had stepped into for a few summer days. Memories have made for,
"A Painting Day".

There is an endless visual as I watch the creek and the passing clouds overhead. The sky's reflections are held by the rushing creek waters. The colors change with the passing clouds and the hour of the day. Watching has made for, "A Painting Day".
