Red Roan 1 & 2

In 2007, I painted my first big canvas. It was of a red roan and the canvas size was 36x36-inches. Today I painted a 6x6-inch canvas of the same red roan. The first larger work took several days with much caressing of the paint. The smaller canvas was done in a few hours. It was an interesting challenge and made for, "A Painting Day.

Lincoln - 2

Last week I was out taking photos, at the Mystic Oak Ranch, for a horse portrait commission. My client wants one small painting of her very big Friesian/Shire cross horse. I decided to paint two portraits and will let my client decide which one she feels represents her big guy the best. Seeing Lincoln made for, "A Painting Day".

Careful

The vacation season is here and this painting is a friendly warning to be careful of the Bison, at the National Parks. They are big animals and from what the locals say, they are twitchy, or unpredictable. The reference photo for this portrait was taken by Jill Maguire. Jill and Dan O'Brian raise buffalo on their ranch, Wild Idea Buffalo Company, in South Dakota. Their website is quite informative and Jill has some great recipes to share. file:///Users/Ruth/Desktop/wildideabuffalo.com:.webloc

Walk This Way

Today, I had to leave the valley and I could see the green-green grass of spring is disappearing and the hills are turning their golden hue of summer. The painting today is, "Walk This Way", a typical scene here in the foothills, this time of year. The momma cow is leading the way, with a calf in tow. The grass is high and dry. Seeing the cattle walking along, made for, "A Painting Day".

Shaded Oaks

I painted a baby filly today but it is in the, what to do next stage, so I am posting a plein air painting, I did over the week-end, at Pardee Lake, here in the foothills. I love getting outside with my paints. It is not a serious venture. I look on the outings as pure fun. Mixing paint and getting it on the canvas quickly, is a challenge all of its own. Stepping out of the studio, made for, "A Painting Day".

Lincoln

Today I finished the first small painting sketch for my favorite equine veterinarian, Karly Delano. Karly and her husband E.J., along with their very knowledgeable staff are the medical angels for our small herd of horses. Karly has a good way with horses and I got to meet her handsome Friesian-Shire cross, horse, Lincoln, last week. Lincoln is a big fellow with a very pleasing disposition. Meeting Lincoln made for "A Painting Day".

Ave Maria Va

This is a painting surprise. I have wanted to paint my friend's horse for sometime and today was the day. Ave Maria Va is an Arabian mare and is so very fine. She has a dish face and a "kind eye", that is so characteristic of the breed. Seeing Ave Maria Va made for, "A Painting Day".

"Las Hermanas" #1, #2 & #3

Here is the completed triptych, "Las Hermanas". Each panel is 9x9-inches. I decided to frame each painting with a thin burnished silver frame, so they can be hung side by side or vertically. The horses are looking out as if each has spotted something coming their way, on the horizon. Seeing the three mares, made for, "A Painting Day".

Golden Boy

This painting sketch is of a handsome golden Palomino. The color is almost unreal, it is so golden. Palomino horses are always impressive and much admired for their color. Seeing this Golden Boy, made for, "A Painting Day".

Champagne

I love the "Eye" of a horse and I thought the cropped photo of this horse's eye was intriguing. I have posted the eye-painting and the reference photo to show you how I have interpreted the image into brushwork on canvas. Seeing this bit of mystery, made for, "A Painting Day".
