Painted Pony

I had some sad news of a horse, "Mare" (Mack's Little Texas) that died on New Year's Day.  The post today is a tribute to "Mare". She in many ways has had a charmed life.  She lived in the prairie lands of Colorado bordering Wyoming.  She was the head mare to a small herd of horses and mules.  Mare was also a beautiful horse that held your gaze when looking out to the pasture.  I painted Mare a few years ago from a reference photo taken by Tori Seavey at Snowy Ridge Ranch.  Tori is a photographer, rancher, leather artists, horse trainer, mom, wife and all around nice person.  Tori has also started a new blog and I think you will find it intriguing to read the day to day activities of ranch life on the plains.  Click HERE for Tori's Blog.  Sadly I say good-bye to Mare.  May she find a new herd to lead in heaven.  Meeting Tori and her herd has made for, "A Painting Day".

This is a sad story, but a lovely tribute. The way you've placed the abstract pattern of markings in the composition makes it very intriguing

Thanks for signing on to follow my blog...I love your work and will be following you also!
This little mare is so pretty and so sad she is gone now.
I used to draw nothing but horses when I was a kid and have been thinking about starting some paintings of horses again...time to get back to my roots!
Very nice to meet you Ruth.

I am so sorry that Mare passed away. I'm glad she had such a great home while she was here on earth. Your painting of her is beautiful and I like the patterns and contrast. Thank you for sharing her story with us.

Je suis désolée d'apprendre le décès de "Mare" et aussi de penser qu'en ce premier de l'an vous avez été triste.
Bel hommage que vous lui rendez... Bisous

Thank-you Mary, Karen and Theresa for your comments. It is so sad to lose one of our horse friends. So sorry to martinealison for getting my fingers on the wrong keys and misspelling your name before hitting Publish.

I love the patterns of light on "Mare". What a lovely tribute to her. Thanks for sharing Tori's blog-I look forward to viewing it. Ruth, I love my calendar!! It sits right over my computer-where I can see it every day.
Thanks also for the beautiful card. Many blessings in the new year!

Such a beautiful horse. I have always loved the painted pony. I didn't know there was a head mare in a herd. Interesting. She certainly lived the good life compared to so many animals with small spaces.
Will definitely check out Tori's blog. Great to see how others live.

A beautiful and sensitive painting of a very special mare who has sadly left us to go to pastures new. I feel sure she will find peace.
