Into The Night - Campsite - Ruth Andre

"Into the Night - Campsite"
12"x12"x1.5" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre

Today's painting is quite minimal and graphic using a subbed palette. I remember my first design class in graphic design and the project was to paint with just black on white. This painting has added color but the minimal design is strong. This may also be the beginning of a new series called, "Into the Night". The name has been percolating on the back burner and when I went to the studio today the painting presented itself. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Wish You Were Here - The Cabin - Postcard - Ruth Andre

"Wish You Were Here - The Cabin - Postcard"
4.5"x6.25" oil & mixed media on paper
by Ruth Andre

A few months ago I moved everything out of my studio and now the search is on to find a few misplaced items. Yesterday as I was plundering a storage area I found these archival handmade postcards that had been purchased over 20 years ago. I felt as if I had found gold. Like a kid I ran to the studio and started painting. This is the first postcard for the series. The title came from years past vacationing at Fallen Leaf Lake near Tahoe, California. Lets say the resort was very rustic and the cabins had an age old patina. I loved the days spent on the lake and remember sending postcards saying, Wish you were here... It has been a day full of memories and, A Painting Day".

Crestfallen - Ruth Andre

"Crestfallen"
8"x7" oil & mixed media on paper
by Ruth Andre

I had painted a larger painting, "Rock Slide" and had some paint left on my palette. I thought it might be interesting to use those same colors, only changing the layers of application. This painting, "Crestfallen" seemed to use the palette to show strength and mystery. Those attributes may have been what I needed that day and it made its way to the painting. It has been, "A Painting Day".

The Old Adobe - Ruth Andre

"The Old Adobe"
8"x7" oil & mixed media on paper
by Ruth Andre

The Southwest is near and dear to my heart. I loved traveling as a kid across country and I love it today. There is so much to see. I especially enjoy the roads through Arizona and New Mexico. The remnants of old and new adobe structures with pickup trucks parked just outside their doors. This painting, "The Old Adobe" reminds me of my travels and has made for, "A Painting Day".

Golden Light - Ruth Andre

"Golden Light"
8"x7" oil & mixed media on paper
by Ruth Andre

Today the sky was grey as the drizzle of rain fell in the valley. The light was golden and the dried grasses seemed to be almost brilliant. I ordered mats for these small paper paintings but have decided to have custom mats made. The extra touch will give each painting its own special space. Setting back and enjoying the rain has made for, "A Painting Day".

Rockslide - Ruth Andre

"Rockslide I & II"
18"x12"x2" Oil & Mixed Media on Panel
by Ruth Andre

"Rockslide I"

"Rockslide II"

It is Sunday afternoon and the sky is filling with rain clouds making the day seem sleepy. The painting, "Rockslide" gives the same feeling as the day I see outside my studio window. Everything is held in quiet just waiting for what is coming next. I do enjoy the palette in this painting. The colors resonate softness and strength making for, "A Painting Day".

Summer Breeze - Ruth Andre

"Summer Breeze"
7"x7" oil & mixed media on paper
by Ruth Andre

The mountain grasses that surround the valley have turned a lovely color of gold. The hills are quite a contrast to the dark green of the old oaks and make me happy just to take it all into view. These small works on paper are quite nice to paint. They set me in place before working on a larger painting. Watching grasses bending in the wind have made for, "A Painting Day".
