Out of Range - Ruth Andre

Studies are sometimes just fun to do. Playing with shape and color give way to experimentation and sometimes interesting outcomes. As I travel in and out of the valley I pass a shooting range. It is close to the road and when the road bends around the mountain it is sometimes shocking to see rifles pointing not so far from my direction. I am thinking, I hope I am out of range. I am posting this small painting today to share a few long sighs that were issued as I tackled this 4x4 inch canvas panel. You would think working small would mean working quickly and the painting would be completed in no time at all. The truth is small is a no man's land at best if you are looking for speed. I lost count on how many times I photographed this painting then changed the painting. I am leaving it as is and moving on to get back on the trail to larger paintings. At the present time I live in Northern California but was born and raised in Southern California. The news has shown the fires in the south have burned many acres of land and many homes have been lost. I used to live in Carlsbad, California, an area most affected by the fires, so the fires seem close to home. I cannot imagine the terror of losing my home in this way. I have mentioned several times before how the landscape inspires my paintings but with this painting, "Fire Storm" I am thinking that life's happenings conjure up inspiration as well. The feelings are there and can find their way to the canvas. It has been, "A Painting Day".

The season has changed the landscape with the tops of the hillsides turning gold and the green grasses fade as they make their dissent down the hillside. The oak trees are dark, almost black in contrast. The season's change has made for, "A Painting Day".
