The painting, "Landfall" is posted above both vertically and horizontally. I could not make up my mind on how it should be presented. If you have a favorite let me know.

At night I like to read and enjoy the end of the day. It is my time to listen to the quiet of the night. Last night the wind kicked up and I could hear tree branches breaking and patio chair cushions sailing around. Then came the sound of the storm making a landfall with rain pounding the metal roof. It made me shiver and nestle in thankful I was safely tucked inside away from the storm. How many times do we stop to enjoy the quiet of the day and the everyday sounds that make our day? It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Listen To the Rain - Ruth Andre

"Listen To the Rain"
4.5"x4.5" Oil and Cold Wax on Paper
Challenge Painting Eighty-Nine
12"x12" Mat
by Ruth Andre
$125.00

Last week we had a lovely rain. I was in the barn listening to the rain hit the metal roof. The sound was luscious. I am just getting this Challenge Painting posted due to a lot going on lately. I leave for Fort Bragg, California on Tuesday for a week of plein air painting with friends. Packing art supplies and clothes for weather that could be warm or cool or cold is always an adventure. I choose to take layers and make them as light as possible. It will be good to be painting the sea coast with old friends.  If I catch a good painting or two I will be posting them here. Plein air painting stretches the art self and it is always a challenge. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Night Rain - Ruth Andre

"Night Rain"
4.5"x4.5" Oil and Cold Wax on Paper
Matted 12"x12" - Professional Hand Cut Mat
Challenge Painting 40
by Ruth Andre

When the temperature turns down just a little after so many days of really hot weather it is truly wonderful. We had cool breezes coming and going today. Walking to the creek late this afternoon was delightfully cool and invigorating. We may be seeing a rain come our way either tonight or tomorrow night. A little rain would be so lovely. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Rain - Ruth Andre

Challenge Painting Twenty-One

It is hot today but just a few days ago we had a lovely afternoon rain. The summer shower                                                                                                                                                did not last long but it was very welcome. The rain may have been our last storm for the season. The creek is now still and will not flow again until the fall season's rain showers begin. Enjoy.

A Painting Day - Rushing Creek - Ruth Andre

"Rushing Creek"
Three Panels Each 6"x6"x1.5" - 6"x18"x1.5" - Triptych
By Ruth Andre
$650/Sold

California has been in drought for the past year. We need rain and it looks like the next storm will bring maybe more than we want all in one dose. We are supposed to receive several inches of rain in a two day period. With the last storm the ground took a deep drink. With the coming storm the creek will fill closing the road out of the valley. We have extra provisions set aside knowing the power will most likely go out after just a few hours of heavy rain. As the weather changes it is exciting and a pain the the behind all in one. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Rain Spirits - Ruth Andre

The windows are wide open in the studio today. The weather is really too beautiful to ignore with the sun warming the earth. We have had a few rain showers that have made the valley come alive with green grasses. It feels like home once again. At least for now all is well. The painting today is in celebration of the spring rains and the rain spirits that bring us such beauty. Lately I have been caught up with the beauty of the valley. Winter has been harsher than most this year and spring is more meaningful than usual. The image above has been taken from my website since I could NOT get the image to load showing its true color. Maybe the spirits have found, "A Painting Day".

Spring Rain - Ruth Andre

"Spring Rain"
12"x6"x1.5" oil & wax on panel
by Ruth Andre

A patron sent an inquiry regarding the painting posted today and as I was looking for another painting I found "Spring Rain". After setting the painting out for a closer look I realized a new photograph was needed. The painting is much quieter than the original photo and I like seeing it now rather than how it was photographed previously.  This is a revisit to, "A Painting Day"

Landfall - Ruth Andre

"Landfall"
10"x10"x1.5" Oil & Mixed Media on Panel
by Ruth Andre

I remember one summer day mowing the yard on our farm in Missouri. I looked out on the horizon and saw a wall of water coming my way. It was all I could do to race for the barn and pull in just missing getting soaked from the rain. Oh the rain smelled so good and the metal roof intensified the sound of the rain making it seem wildly exciting. Simple things have made for, "A Painting Day".

Field of Dreams - Ruth Andre

This is the first painting since my studio has undergone a floor to ceiling purge to add room for my painting and needed painting materials. Everything has a place and now I just need to find that place. I set aside a small canvas that will be used for a donation painting and now it is no where to be found.
 I need a guide.
With the new year I have new hope, new goals and a field of dreams to pursue. I am so lucky to have my own painting place and a supportive nurturing husband to take on  helping with the studio cleansing. It is so good to have, "A Painting Day".

Late Night Rain - Ruth Andre

The rain continues to pour down here in the valley. The cow folks are thrilled with the moisture for it makes for good green grass and keeps the cows and calves well fed. Tonight after feeding the horses I went to the studio just as the day's light disappeared over the mountain. The dark of night set in and I could  hear the rain's steady fall as I painted. Listening to the ran made for, "A Painting Day"

Inside the Rain - Ruth Andre

There is something special about a rainy day and watching the rain through a foggy window as it makes its way to the earth. The grey clouds hover over the valley and give the feeling of closeness. Then there are the treks outside with the rain jackets and Muck boots and cold fingers that make you feel so happy to be part of it all. Feeling the rain has made for, "A Painting Day".
