Stormy Morning - Ruth Andre

"Stormy Morning"
5"x7" oil on panel
by Ruth Andre
SOLD

This is another painting from the Fort Bragg, California trip. The wind was up and the sea was rushing to shore as the seals played in the surf. It must be so grand to live on the coast and enjoy the constant movement of the sea. I truly fell in love with Fort Bragg during this trip north. I wanted to find one of the coastal cottages that are so quaint and call it my own. It was, "A Painting Day".

Fog In The Morning - Ruth Andre

"Fog In the Morning"
8"x11" oil on panel
by Ruth Andre
$175.00

The morning was filled with a lingering fog as I looked out over the ocean's coastal buttes. The color of the distant mountains were muted. by the fog. They had a sleepy look like they were not ready for the day to begin. It was not only, "A Painting Day" it was a day filled with surprises as the seals swam by playing in the waves.

Cliffside - Ruth Andre

"Cliffside"
6"x6"Oil on Archival Canvas Panel
by Ruth Andre
$125.00

There are times I wonder why I like the solitary figure in a portrait painting or a lone tree in a landscape painting. Some of my friends tease me about painting just a tree but these trees seem to speak to me so I paint them.  I like things that are minimal and feel uncomplicated even if they really are. I like to see a small painting perched on an easel on my desk or side table. The paintings feel intimate and my own. They are just a breath of another world or time and I really like that idea. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Bayside - Ruth Andre

"Bayside"
7"x5" Oil on Canvas Panel
Plein Air
by Ruth Andre
$125
On the last day in Fort Bragg our group of painters unpacked our gear in a lovely little cove area. The bay was almost hidden by a good size mountain and trees. It was such a quiet spot and so beautiful. As I set up my easel a seal swam by with his head peeking up out of the water. I guess he was curious to see what I was doing. It was such a lovely sunny day and it made it so hard to say good-bye to Fort Bragg. I hope to go again next year. It was definitely, "A Painting Day".

Lone Cypress - Ruth Andre

"Lone Cypress"
4"x5" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre
$95

It was the end of the day and I was waiting for my painting friends to breakdown their easels and call it a day. When I saw them lingering I thought I might have time for just one more small painting. This old bushy Cypress was rugged and had to be strong to hold on through many a windy day. Luckily it was a glorious sunny day as we painted along the Butte's edge. It was, "A Painting Day".

Old Cyress - Ruth Andre

"Old Cypress"
4"x5" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre
$95

This is a little warm up painting I did as I stood by the cliffside path on a butte over looking the ocean  in Mendocino, California. The grasses along the path were still wet with morning dew and made for a wet walk. Luckily I was wearing Muck Boots and my feet stayed dry and warm. It was the beginning of, "A Painting Day".

Coastal Blues - Ruth Andre

"Coastal Blues"
6"x6"
oil on canvas by ruth Andre
SOLD

Last week I hitched a ride with my painter friend, Bruce Hancock and traveled north to Fort Bragg and the Mendocino, California coastal towns. We were meeting a group of artists that we have been painting with for the past 7 years. Howard Rees was giving a four day workshop. The wind was just a breeze and the sun was shining as I stood on the butte painting this scene. Up the hill from my painting sight was the Mendocino boardwalk where several of my painting buddies painted the old Victorian shops. The ocean was mesmerizing with its many blues as the waves rushed to shore. Painting along the coast in northern California coast made for, "A Painting Day".

Busting 5 Myths About Art & Interior Design by Kristina Tober

I found a fabulous article and I want to share it with you. It was written by Kristina Tober  and is published on the Make It Better Blog. It gives excellent suggestions for selecting art for your home. I first saw the article on the Gallery 901 -  Santa Fe Art Gallery blog and asked if I could republish the article here on my blog, "A Painting Day".  Enjoy.

Desert Crossing - Ruth Andre

"Desert Crossing"

The subtle colors of the desert land have a calming quietness. The, "Dessert Crossing" painting reminds me of the desert spring colors. It would be wonderful to take a trip to the desert this winter to paint and explore the quiet vistas. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Crossing the Chama - Ruth Andre

"Crossing the Chama"
6"x6"x1.5" oil & mixed media on cradled panel
by Ruth Andre

A few years ago I met a group of artists at Ghost Ranch just north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. We set off one morning and drove north on the dirt roads following along the Chama River. We painted, had a picnic and visited a local monastery. The day was full of adventures and crossing the Chama River made the day totally memorable. The Chama River meanders through the Chama Valley and it is breathtaking. The "Cross" series has been an interesting challenge. I love seeing the cross image come to life in its own way in each painting. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Safe Crossing - Ruth Andre

"Safe Crossing"
6"x6"x1.5" oil on panel
by Ruth Andre

Several things came to mind as I painted today. First I have received some lovely comments regarding the "Cross Series" paintings. It makes me happy to think these small works have been thought provoking and have given a feeling of serenity. I thought I would stop painting crosses after the six previously completed but now I am onto painting at least ten for a small booklet. I thought the booklet would be a lovely greeting during the holiday season. So there will be more paintings added to the "Cross Series".    It has been,
"A Painting Day.

It is exciting to see my painting on view in such a lovely museum setting. A special thank-you goes out to Ken Ratner and his work to support the arts and artists.

The Last Stand - Ruth Andre

"The Last Stand"
6"x6" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre
SOLD

I am entering a small works show in the Mid-West. Each painting needs to depict the mid-west and be only 6"x6". I called my entry above, "The Last Stand" thinking of how the tree line divides the farm pastures and the open fields. On our farm we had fencing that separated the pasture from the open land. In the fence row there were trees and bushes making a nice wind break between fields. I will post how things go for the show in a later post. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Storm On the Way - Ruth Andre

The weather is the constant companion for a farmer. You plant early or late depending on the weather. You can lose your crop due to high winds or too much rain or not enough rain. The weather channel becomes your HOME base station on the radio, television and Internet. Today's painting shows what looks like a storm way out in the west heading across to the plains.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

Winter Crossing- Ruth Andre

"Winter Crossing"
6"x6"x1.5" oil & mixed media on cradled panel
by Ruth andre

So many ideas came into my mind as I painted this rather quiet cross. It felt very spiritual, almost like an angel in flight. The colors are subtle but they seem to be telling a story. I will let the painting say what it needs to say. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Crossing Ties - Ruth Andre

"Crossing Ties"
6"x6"x1.5" oil & mixed media on panel
by Ruth Andre

The "Cross" painting series has been interesting. I have had time to explore within a theme. The painting, "Cross Ties" celebrates the many relationships we forge in our life. I may have one more 'Cross" painting and then it is back to work. I have been accepted into the "River Reflections" exhibit celebrating the Mokelumne River. I will be heading out to paint the river and the surrounding landscape. The exhibit will travel with 3 opening receptions. I need to get my paintings completed and ready for presentation. Updates will follow as I make my way to the water's edge with easel in hand. It has been,
"A Painting Day".
