Pumpkin Patch - Ruth Andre

With the fall season fast approaching there are pumpkins popping up here and there as I drive the back roads. I love the pumpkin patches in the valley with the pumpkin vines looking rangy and wild. The painting today, "Pumpkin Patch" is my vision of the open fields and has  led to,
"A Painting Day".

The Coral Sea - Ruth Andre

I will be in Fort Bragg for a few days painting with friends. I hope to take lots of photos and share a few of them here. The Northern California coast is truly gorgeous. I continue to paint my abstract visions using colors that move with my mood. The sea is beckoning and has made for,
"A Painting Day".

Snow Fields Through A Bird's Eye - Ruth Andre

The cool of the paint colors made me think of snow and how it drifted on our farm fields in Missouri. The land was left to rest under a white blanket of snow. The quiet snow day in winter made for, "A Painting Day".

The Red Door - Ruth Andre

Today's painting is full of smoldering energy. The intense reds and oranges mixed with yellow ocher have ignited the painting. I went to the easel knowing I wanted to paint with red and the rest fell together making for, "A Painting Day".

Waves Through A Bird's Eye - Ruth Andre

The studio is coming alive with several new abstract paintings. I love working with the palette knife and letting the design come to life as I move the paint onto the canvas. Enjoy the salt air of the sea and, "A Painting Day".

Desert Blue - Ruth Andre

The palette of the desert landscape is subtle and meditative. When I walk the sandy land
it is calming and gives me a feeling of peace. Enjoying the long view to the mountains has made for,

Voices From the Valley - Ruth Andre

My friend Kay is traveling the Southwest. As she ventures across the country I have been receiving a few photos and information on the Who, What and Where of the places and people she meets. If you would like to follow along with Kay's journey you can find her photos on her flickr Photostream. The painting today was inspired by Kay's words after visiting Canyon de Chelly. Thank-you Kay, for making, "A Painting Day".

Early Morning - Ruth Andre

For those  of you that love the early hours of the day, it is truly a blessed time to see the landscape and feel its quiet beginnings. It is only September but the mornings have turned chilly giving me reason to find a jacket and maybe a pair of gloves to go out to feed the horses. It is always a special time and one that has made for, "A Painting Day".

Wing Master - Ruth Andre

This painting is dedicated to a good friend that I lost this past week. Judy was always bigger than life and loved color. I used to tease Judy by telling her if it is not overdone it is just not Judy. She always went the extra mile no matter her assigned task. Judy is missed and will always be loved. I hope Judy is soaring in her beautiful new life. This has been a day full of memories that made for, "A Painting Day".

The Fog Is Lifting - Ruth Andre

The mornings in the valley are cool and often have fog that drifts and finally lifts letting the sun shine through. The lifting fog has made for, "A Painting Day".

Just Enjoy the View - Ruth Andre

Working with a new color palette today and I love the wispy feeling in this painting, "Just Enjoy the View". It makes me think of a rainy day and getting sleepy as the rain falls quietly to the ground. Working my way to relax on, "A Painting Day".

Let's Hurry Home - Ruth Andre

The painting today is a second view of the snow dusting the landscape. My goal was to lighten the feeling of the painting using quieter paint colors and changing the canvas format. The dusting snow made for "A Painting Day".

First Snow - Ruth Andre

I decided to paint a winter scene today. The air-conditioning is working overtime making it cool in the studio. My dog Sadie is happy to join me napping the day away. Thinking cool has made for, "A Painting Day".

Pale Face - Ruth Andre

My neighbors are out of town and they asked me to feed their menagerie. They live up the hill and their view is spectacular. As I was taking hay to their horses I looked out and the afternoon sun glittered on the mountain while the trees below were in shadow. It was a dramatic sight and has made for, "A Painting Day".

Breaking Clouds - Ruth Andre

If you click on the image to enlarge it and take a second look at this painting it seems to me that the water is moving. I got myself thinking the distant water and the closer whitecaps were all moving to shore. Do you think I may have spent too much time in the studio today? Maybe so? No matter, it was a fun day and, "A Painting Day".

The Edge of Winter - Ruth Andre

This is a painting study using very subtle color changes. The blue and purple gray colors make me want to grab a parka or stand by a roaring fire to stay warm. Thinking about walking in the woods on a winter day has made for, "A Painting Day"

Stormy Morning - Ruth Andre

In just a few weeks I am leaving for a trip to Fort Bragg, California to meet up with a group of friends. We will be plein air painting the coastline of Fort Bragg and Mendocino I am looking forward to being on the coast and feeling all the sea has to offer. Hopefully there will be a few foggy mornings so I can enjoy the subtle colors as the fog holds tight to the sea. Thinking about the blustery waves of the sea has made for, "A Painting Day".

Fall Splendor - Ruth Andre

While living in the Mid-West I always thought winter would be the least appealing time of year and then I experienced the hot and humid summers living and working on the farm. Winter became a haven, a time to reflect and a time to dress in layers and enjoy the quiet landscape. Fall has always been my favorite season since the heat of summer has faded away. It is a romantic time and a time to enjoy the final harvest and the colorful landscape. Today's painting, "Fall Splendor" shares my love for the fall season, making for, "A Painting Day".

The Sea - Ruth Andre

I follow several blogs and one of my favorite blogs is Ill Seen Ill Said posted by Jane Flanagan. Jane is a very special person and shares her day to day in such a lovely way. Jane recently traveled back to her home in Ireland and this painting, "The Sea" is from a photo she took while away. The photo took me in and as I painted the image I kept feeling the sea would pull me in and take me away. The sea has made for, "A painting Day".

The Shadow of the Mountain - Ruth Andre

The grasses in the valley are so pale and dry they look almost white. As the sun starts to set the mountain sides are shadowed. The contrast is amazing. I feel as if I am painting to find my way and most likely will continue painting small studies to use as a guide for the next step to follow. I feel good and totally frustrated all in one. I know that may not make sense because it does not to me either. All I know it has been, "A Painting Day".

Thinking Pink Snow - Ruth Andre

I really love painting these small color and design studies. They come with no worries, just letting the paint move to the canvas. Thinking 'Pink' made for, "A Painting Day".

Coming Rain - Ruth Andre

The painting today, "Coming Rain" is a scene that I pass taking the back roads to Sutter Creek. You can see the mountains, the tall trees and the rolling hills. The day I took this photo a few sprinkles of rain started to fall so it was a quick photo session. Riding the back roads to Sutter Creek made for,
"A Painting Day".

First Fall Rain - Ruth Andre

My studio was nice and cool today. You can feel the season changing from summer to fall. I don't know if I am ready for the coming cold weather and the bulky sweaters and over boots to stay warm while feeding and cleaning stalls for the horses. The rains will be here soon as well. The painting today is a small study and a nod to the fall season to come. Feeling a chill in the air made for, "A painting Day".

Shadowed Mountain - Ruth Andre

The painting today, "Shadowed Mountain" is another small color study. The composition is simple but intense. As a child growing up in Rainbow Valley, California I could see Rainbow Peak everyday as it was the center of the valley. One summer I hiked to the top of the peak and the view was quite spectacular. This mountain was a part of me.Seeing the surrounding mountains as the day comes to an end has made for, "A Painting Day".

Red Mountain - Ruth Andre

Yesterday I decided to paint as intuitively as possible, meaning I wanted to mix the paint and put it on the canvas and let it be. This painting, "Red Mountain" is a study of the shear cliffs at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico just a few miles north of Santa Fe. I was visiting Ghost Ranch years ago and in the late afternoon I walked out into the valley and the sun was hitting the cliffs making a grand show of color at the top and then the color turned to purple as the cliffs made a shadow on one another.  The contrast of the orange to purple was such a magnificent sight. Ghost Ranch is one of my favorite places and one that has made for, "A Painting Day".
