Scout

This is a painting of a Paint that lives on a beautiful ranch in Utah.  My friend and fellow artist, Brent Flory, sent me a few photos of the horses on his ranch and this one caught my eye.  The horse has a majestic look with the back light catching his mane.  Paints with their unusual color patterns are always a delight to see.  Painting Scout made for, "A Painting Day".

Valley Elk

This is another painting entry for the Elk Foundation.  It is of a handsome bull elk.  I am so taking by the beauty of the wild and majestic elk.  My studio has a variety of paintings of wild creatures at the moment.  It is like my own private world in nature. Painting wildlife has made for, "A

Study for Golden

After posting the painting, "White Cloud" I received information for a show with the theme, "Golden".  I perked right up and thought the "White Cloud" painting would be perfect for the show.  Then I read the show prospectus stating the painting size limit is 4x6-inches.  OHHHHHHH!  Since the show deadline is just in a few days I went to work on this little tiny painting and am naming it "Golden".  The big brushes got swept to the side and the little brushes moved in for, "A Painting Day".

White Cloud

The rain is still coming down here in Northern California.  The creek is way up and has been for several days.  It makes for a true adventure getting across the creek and out of the valley. I have spent these rainy days in the studio painting except to venture out to feed and bring the horses to the barn.  We all get wet and the horses are full of energy so I step quickly under the yellow slicker. The painting today is of a wild Mustang stallion.  You may remember the post showing the work in progress photo a few weeks back.  I am happy to say it is now finished and ready to enjoy and it made for "A Painting Day".

Roaney

Sometimes we meet people that think they are just grand and when I met Roaney she was just that kind of horse.  Somehow she knows she is a beauty and has been able to win attention from the people in her life, some even calling her Princess.  Roaney is a beautiful Roan mare.  She is also a Cow loving horse and loves to work cows so it is good to know this about Roaney before taking her for a spin.  Roaney lives on a beautiful ranch in the Paso Robles, California area with her owner, Robin.  She is a part of a small heard of horses with a fair amount of acres to roam.  Luckily Roaney has met her match with Robin and they make a good team working together.  Meeting Roaney on a lovely spring day made for, "A Painting Day".

Wild Mustang Stallion

This has been a busy Saturday in the studio.  I took on finishing a small Roan horse portrait and finished this one of a Wild Mustang Stallion.  I am not sure what the name will be for this painting.  Names usually come to me as I paint a portrait but this one has a lot of life and wildness and it definitely needs something special.  Thinking of the Mustang and their life of freedom on the plains made for, "A Painting Day".

Elk

This is a busy time of year for most artists.  We are entering shows and painting for coming shows and submitting portfolios to galleries in hopes of winning the favor of a judge or gallery owner.  The painting today is of an elk for the Elk Foundation.  With each new animal I paint there is a learning curve.  The nuance of the facial features is so different with each animal and the Elk was a mighty big boy to paint.  Please enjoy "A Painting Day".

Texas Lady & A Love Story

I got in the mood to paint a cow after reading a wonderful old fashion love story by Ree Drummond-The Pioneer Woman.  Ree lives on a cattle ranch on the open plains of Oklahoma miles away from the city life she had become accustomed to while growing up and then later when she went off to college on the west coast.  The book is a very uplifting bit of fun and takes  you back to the old movie days when romance was what we all expected and treasured. Megan Noir & Moses Botkin Challenge

This is my third Challenge month with the Moses Botkin Challenge group.  It was also my turn to choose the March Challenge.  This may sound funny but I had never painted an image using a black background so I decided to Challenge myself by asking the group to paint an image on a black background and making it a must do for a new painting.  I chose to paint a little filly, Megan, that lives down the road.  Megan is older now and has been trained to ride and her owner says she is the best little mare.  So with true joy I painted Megan making for, "A Painting Day".

The Challenge member's paintings are below so please enjoy the show.

Native of the Plains

As an artist one hopes to grow as you continue to paint and gain confidence to try new things.  The 'Native of the Plains' painting is one I feel as if I have taken a 'next step' with my painting and have freed my brushes to let them flow.  The image is of a wild Mustang stallion that is still able to roam freely in the open  plains.  May the wild horse be allowed to live as they have for centuries on the land where they were born. Thinking of the wild Mustangs made for, "A Painting Day".

"Cay" & "Out of the Box" Exhibit

The "Out of the Box" exhibit is a biannual fundraiser for the National Museum of Wildlife Art.  This is my second year to be invited to submit a painted box for the coming event.  You may recognize the painting as Cayenne, one of my small herd of horses, on the box top.  This little painting is 3x9-inches and the larger painting that is in its final stages is 12x40-inches.  The larger painting should be completed shortly.  The "Out of the Box" exhibit dates are June 24 - June 25, 2011 and the reception is June 24th at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming.

A Bit of News

Today the painting, "Cooper" found his new owners.  The painting was delivered to
Erma and Joe and they loved their special keepsake portrait of their very sweet dog, Cooper.

I want to share with you little Kaylie found her owner, Jim.  Jim was very pleased with Kaylie' portrait as well!

This is "Bison" a painting that went to the Panhandle Plains Historical Museum for the Panhandle Plains Invitational Art Show and sold at the opening reception.  I am very pleased that Bison found a home in the plains of Texas.  Bison Sold at the PPHM reception.

I enjoy painting and seeing how happy patrons are when they see their newly acquired paintings makes for more, "Painting Days".

Work In Progress - White Cloud

This past week my painting days have been exciting moving from small 6x6 canvas's to larger works.  A few are even nearing completion.  Oh Happy Day!  Today I am posting a work in progress.  It is of a wild Mustang stallion, White Cloud.  The canvas is 12x24,  just the perfect size to have room to move the paint around.  It needs to dry for a day or two and then it will go back onto the easel for hopefully the final lay in of paint and a final post.  Wish me luck!  Painting a wild stallion made for, "A Painting Day".

Too Tall

This is a painting that was just plain fun to paint.  The mule, Too Tall, seemed to show her wild and funny character to me as I painted.  Too Tall lives in the plains of Colorado with her owners, Ben and Tori.  You might like to read more about Too Tall on Tori's Blog at Snowy Ridge Ranch.  Meeting Too Tall made for, "A Painting Day".

March Calendar

March is still wet and cold here in the foothills but I am seeing signs of spring just a few miles down the mountain as I head for town on my weekly treks.  The horses are shedding their winter coats so all is on track for a few weeks of spring weather coming in the next month or two.  The studio is my haven and it is filled to the brim at the moment.  I have gotten started on a few larger paintings and finding room for all of them as they move through their different stages is a bit of a juggling act but the work is coming together.  March is making for many, "A Painting Day".
