The show runs through December 30, 2014 so if you are in Santa Fe or would like to call the gallery regarding one of my paintings it may be available. I am so sorry for the delay for this post.

Small Works are popular around the holidays and I have already entered two shows featuring small works this year. The Gallery 901 on Canyon Road in Santa Fe will be exhibiting all 6"x6" cradled panel paintings in the, "Art in Wax" exhibit from November 21 to December 30th, 2014. The reception will be November 21st. I am thrilled to be part of this show in the City Different - Santa Fe. It made for, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Where's Momma

"Where's Momma"
4"x4"x.75 Oil on Cradled Panel
by Ruth Andre
$95.00

Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays!
I want to wish you
all the best
for the holidays and a New Year filled with great joy.
I have enjoyed posting here on ,"A Painting Day" writing about what
goes on here in the valley as I post my paintings. Right now we have
a great deal of cuteness going on since the late calves that were born just a month
ago are getting up in size. The momma cows group them together in what I call a
nursery with one cow left to babysit while the other cows go out to graze. They
have a good system keeping the babies protected and the mommas fed. The painting today
is of a small heifer calf with a sweet look in her eye. I do love these little ones. Yesterday,
was, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Passages - Ruth Andre

"Passages"
4"x18" oil & mixed media on Arches paper
by Ruth Andre

"Passages"
Original Oil on Paper by Ruth Andre
Giclee prints will be available in 2015

Today was a day to stop and enjoy a few moments tucked away in my studio. I, like everyone else I know have been making lists and shopping to get ready for the holidays. As the year comes to an end it is a time to give and to reflect and to set goals for the coming year. My thoughts turned to the passing of time and the passages of our life. Today's painting is called, "Passages" and it is painted on  Arches paper. I felt that this work on paper was successful and that led me to think about making multiple prints of the image. My mind is buzzing with ideas and it is exciting. I truly hope your holiday is filled with joy and love and may the New Year be filled with great happiness.
It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Hillside Reflections - Ruth Andre

"Hillside Reflections"
10"x10"x1.5" Oil & Mixed Media on Cradled Panel
by Ruth Andre
$550.00

I was out today and the roads were very busy which is unusual for our little town of Sutter Creek. Then I remembered we have a storm coming and most people were out stocking up in case they cannot get out for a few days. The painting above is one I posted sometime back but when I saw it today it seemed to be alive with the same energy of the season and the coming storm. I will keep you posted!

A Painting Day - Rushing Creek - Ruth Andre

"Rushing Creek"
Three Panels Each 6"x6"x1.5" - 6"x18"x1.5" - Triptych
By Ruth Andre
$650/Sold

California has been in drought for the past year. We need rain and it looks like the next storm will bring maybe more than we want all in one dose. We are supposed to receive several inches of rain in a two day period. With the last storm the ground took a deep drink. With the coming storm the creek will fill closing the road out of the valley. We have extra provisions set aside knowing the power will most likely go out after just a few hours of heavy rain. As the weather changes it is exciting and a pain the the behind all in one. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Woodland Reflections - Ruth Andre

"Woodland Reflections"
Three Panels Each 6"x6"x1.5" - Triptych
by Ruth Andre
$650

This is such a busy time of year and we are all sailing around with much to do. I am enjoying the holiday season and am trying to do just what I want to do. Thanksgiving was a special time with my family gathering together at a family camp in the Sequoias in California. We went to see the giant Redwoods, General Sherman and General Grant. The whole forest was so beautiful but these old trees named after our famous forefathers were amazing to see. The camp was full of kids, parents and grandparents all celebrating their time together. May your holidays be filled with
Good Cheer and much Happiness!

A Painting Day - Breaking Through the Clouds - Ruth Andre

"Breaking Through the Clouds"
6"6"x1.5" oil & wax on cradled panel
by Ruth Andre

The mornings are looking so cold these days. I can look out and see the sun breaking through the clouds just up the hill while our land is still shaded by the clouds. The change in seasons is always exciting but fall is my favorite time of year. There is a stirring, an awakening to get yourself ready for something special. Maybe it is the coming holidays or the beauty that abounds in the changing landscape that makes me feel new energy. It is a special time and for me, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Roadblock - Ruth Andre

"Roadblock"
6"x6"x.75" oil & wax on cradled panel
by Ruth Andre

Some of you have been to my home and studio and know the road that I travel in and out of the valley. To say it is treacherous is not overstating the adventurous drive. A few that have visited say they will never come again. It is not due to my hospitality but due to our wild mountain road with a cliff on one side going down to the Rancheria River below and shear mountains on the other side. The road is also a single lane most of the way with turn-outs to let two cars pass. You are getting the idea that to live in the back country of Sutter Creek means you will also pay your dues for the quiet and solitude. My painting today is titled, "Roadblock" in reference to having my truck be just that on this country dirt road. Newcomers that fly down the road are often caught slamming on their brakes when they realize the road is just not wide enough for two vehicles to pass. It seems the traffic speed has risen from 15 to 20 miles per hour to faster speeds and at the higher speed it is very hard to stop on a dirt road. I have only witnessed 10 cars flying over the cliff's edge. Luckily everyone survived those tumbles and most of them were able to traverse the mountain and get back up to the road and then walk out to find help since cell service is spotty. This has been a bit of a "vent" post. I wanted to share that not all things are as they appear at times. It has been quiet today and, "A Painting Day".

Now that the season has changed there is frost on the pasture grasses each morning. The horses have a thin white coat on their backs as well. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre - A Painting Day - Early Snow

"Early Snow"
6"x6"x.75" Oil & Mixed Media on Cradled Panel
by Ruth Andre

The valley is cold with a heavy frost now that summer has slipped away. Winter seems to be on its way. Some of my friends live where they have already had a winter storm that filled the landscape with snow. Are any of us ready for winter this year?
I have real work to do in the coming weeks to paint for three shows. I will be picking up the brush soon to paint my furry horse and cow friends. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Ruth Andre - A Painting Day - Wild Horse Crossing

"Wild Horse Crossing"
6"x6"x.75" oil on panel
by Ruth Andre

The wild horses still roam in the rural areas of the plains. It is so special to see the banes of wild horses being free. I have a favorite wild horse photographer and his name is Mark Terrell and you can find his wild horse photos Here on his blog, Wild Horses of Nevada Photography. Mark must be a patient man to capture on film the intimate moments within the wild herd. My love of the plains and the wild horses has made for, "A Painting Day".

Quiet Cove - Ruth Andre

"Quiet Cove"
6"x8" oil on panel
by Ruth Andre
$150.00
Sold

There are so many hidden coves and quiet hide away areas in Fort Bragg. I loved seeing people walk along the beach with their dogs just enjoying the day. You can tell from my previous posts how much I loved being in Fort Bragg painting on the buttes and sandy coves. The group of painters loved this quiet cove with its sandy beach and beautiful view out to the sea. It was, "A Painting Day".

Stormy Morning - Ruth Andre

"Stormy Morning"
5"x7" oil on panel
by Ruth Andre
SOLD

This is another painting from the Fort Bragg, California trip. The wind was up and the sea was rushing to shore as the seals played in the surf. It must be so grand to live on the coast and enjoy the constant movement of the sea. I truly fell in love with Fort Bragg during this trip north. I wanted to find one of the coastal cottages that are so quaint and call it my own. It was, "A Painting Day".

Fog In The Morning - Ruth Andre

"Fog In the Morning"
8"x11" oil on panel
by Ruth Andre
$175.00

The morning was filled with a lingering fog as I looked out over the ocean's coastal buttes. The color of the distant mountains were muted. by the fog. They had a sleepy look like they were not ready for the day to begin. It was not only, "A Painting Day" it was a day filled with surprises as the seals swam by playing in the waves.

Cliffside - Ruth Andre

"Cliffside"
6"x6"Oil on Archival Canvas Panel
by Ruth Andre
$125.00

There are times I wonder why I like the solitary figure in a portrait painting or a lone tree in a landscape painting. Some of my friends tease me about painting just a tree but these trees seem to speak to me so I paint them.  I like things that are minimal and feel uncomplicated even if they really are. I like to see a small painting perched on an easel on my desk or side table. The paintings feel intimate and my own. They are just a breath of another world or time and I really like that idea. It has been, "A Painting Day".

Bayside - Ruth Andre

"Bayside"
7"x5" Oil on Canvas Panel
Plein Air
by Ruth Andre
$125
On the last day in Fort Bragg our group of painters unpacked our gear in a lovely little cove area. The bay was almost hidden by a good size mountain and trees. It was such a quiet spot and so beautiful. As I set up my easel a seal swam by with his head peeking up out of the water. I guess he was curious to see what I was doing. It was such a lovely sunny day and it made it so hard to say good-bye to Fort Bragg. I hope to go again next year. It was definitely, "A Painting Day".

Lone Cypress - Ruth Andre

"Lone Cypress"
4"x5" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre
$95

It was the end of the day and I was waiting for my painting friends to breakdown their easels and call it a day. When I saw them lingering I thought I might have time for just one more small painting. This old bushy Cypress was rugged and had to be strong to hold on through many a windy day. Luckily it was a glorious sunny day as we painted along the Butte's edge. It was, "A Painting Day".

Old Cyress - Ruth Andre

"Old Cypress"
4"x5" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre
$95

This is a little warm up painting I did as I stood by the cliffside path on a butte over looking the ocean  in Mendocino, California. The grasses along the path were still wet with morning dew and made for a wet walk. Luckily I was wearing Muck Boots and my feet stayed dry and warm. It was the beginning of, "A Painting Day".

Coastal Blues - Ruth Andre

"Coastal Blues"
6"x6"
oil on canvas by ruth Andre
SOLD

Last week I hitched a ride with my painter friend, Bruce Hancock and traveled north to Fort Bragg and the Mendocino, California coastal towns. We were meeting a group of artists that we have been painting with for the past 7 years. Howard Rees was giving a four day workshop. The wind was just a breeze and the sun was shining as I stood on the butte painting this scene. Up the hill from my painting sight was the Mendocino boardwalk where several of my painting buddies painted the old Victorian shops. The ocean was mesmerizing with its many blues as the waves rushed to shore. Painting along the coast in northern California coast made for, "A Painting Day".

I found a fabulous article and I want to share it with you. It was written by Kristina Tober  and is published on the Make It Better Blog. It gives excellent suggestions for selecting art for your home. I first saw the article on the Gallery 901 -  Santa Fe Art Gallery blog and asked if I could republish the article here on my blog, "A Painting Day".  Enjoy.

Desert Crossing - Ruth Andre

"Desert Crossing"
6"x6"x1.2" oil & mixed media on cradled panel
by Ruth Andre

The subtle colors of the desert land have a calming quietness. The, "Dessert Crossing" painting reminds me of the desert spring colors. It would be wonderful to take a trip to the desert this winter to paint and explore the quiet vistas. It has been, "A Painting Day".
