Lone Cypress - Ruth Andre

"Lone Cypress"
4"x5" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre
$95

It was the end of the day and I was waiting for my painting friends to breakdown their easels and call it a day. When I saw them lingering I thought I might have time for just one more small painting. This old bushy Cypress was rugged and had to be strong to hold on through many a windy day. Luckily it was a glorious sunny day as we painted along the Butte's edge. It was, "A Painting Day".

Old Cyress - Ruth Andre

"Old Cypress"
4"x5" oil on canvas

$95

This is a little warm up painting I did as I stood by the cliffside path on a butte over looking the ocean  in Mendocino, California. The grasses along the path were still wet with morning dew and made for a wet walk. Luckily I was wearing Muck Boots and my feet stayed dry and warm. It was the beginning of, "A Painting Day".

Coastal Blues - Ruth Andre

"Coastal Blues"

SOLD

Last week I hitched a ride with my painter friend, Bruce Hancock and traveled north to Fort Bragg and the Mendocino, California coastal towns. We were meeting a group of artists that we have been painting with for the past 7 years. Howard Rees was giving a four day workshop. The wind was just a breeze and the sun was shining as I stood on the butte painting this scene. Up the hill from my painting sight was the Mendocino boardwalk where several of my painting buddies painted the old Victorian shops. The ocean was mesmerizing with its many blues as the waves rushed to shore. Painting along the coast in northern California coast made for, "A Painting Day".

Grassy Bluff - Ruth Andre

"Grassy Bluff"
6"x8" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre

This is another painting from my time in Fort Bragg, California. The beautiful ocean was just over this grassy bluff. I loved the quiet peaceful feeling of the meadow. It called to me as the paint went down making for, "A Painting Day".

Note: I will be posting paintings from Fort Bragg for a few days and then I will be posting paintings as I travel across the country to the Mid-West. It should be a fun trip and one that I have been looking forward to making for a long time.

Sea Bluff - Ruth Andre

"Sea Bluff"
6"x8" oil on canvas
by Ruth Andre

This past week I had the opportunity to travel to Fort Bragg, California. I met up with a group of artists and painted the beautiful vistas available along the sea coast. The weather was just about perfect except for a couple of days with high wind that buffeted our easels and made for some interesting brush work at times. This painting, "Sea Bluff" was painted in Mendocino right across from the old town shops. Mendocino was bustling with tourists visiting the shops and strolling down to the bluff's edge to see the coastal waters as the waves pounded the rocky coast. It felt so good to paint plein air and enjoy the sounds of the sea. The day made me grateful for, "A Painting Day".

Stormy Morning - Ruth Andre

In just a few weeks I am leaving for a trip to Fort Bragg, California to meet up with a group of friends. We will be plein air painting the coastline of Fort Bragg and Mendocino I am looking forward to being on the coast and feeling all the sea has to offer. Hopefully there will be a few foggy mornings so I can enjoy the subtle colors as the fog holds tight to the sea. Thinking about the blustery waves of the sea has made for, "A Painting Day".

Cypress Windrow

My work ethic has come to a standstill or so it would seem.  I went to the studio, took a look for more pigs to paint and then decided to just play and paint another palette knife landscape.  I had started this painting while on the Fort Bragg trip.  The group of artists I was with all met in Mendocino to paint for the day.  I was standing by the Mendocino Museum, an old house beautifully preserved.  What a marvelous view the long ago owners had from this old home.  I painted the hedge of Cypress trees that made a buffer from the sea breezes.  The view showed just a glimpse of the sea.  Enjoying the Mendocino shoreline made for, "A Painting Day".

The Cliffs

The sun was shining and the wind was whistling through the grove of cypress  trees that I was huddled between as I painted the cliffs off the Mendocino shore.  It is the same location as my last post and the stark beauty of the open land and how it cascaded down the cliffs to the raging surf totally inspired me.  The view was spectacular.  How lovely it was to have, "A Painting Day".

Fort Bragg - Plein Air Painting Trip

Last week I was painting with a group of painters in Fort Bragg, California .  The weather was perfect and we headed out each day to a different location.  I cannot tell you how beautiful the ocean is along the shoreline and cliff areas.  As you know I paint animals and spend a lot of time painting in my studio, but there is something about getting outside and painting from life.  The colors are intense and shadow areas have an array of colors and designs that you just cannot see in a photograph.  I also tried something new on this trip when my artist friend, Bruce Hancock, let me borrow a small palette knife.  I decided to experiment with the palette knife and when I did, it was truly fun working with the thick luscious paints.  I will be sharing a few more of the Fort Bragg paintings in this week's blog posts so check back for the art tour.  The trip to Fort Bragg made for, "A Painting Day".
