Solo Show - Ruth Andre - Gallery 10

The New Year is here and speeding away in time. I have been busy getting paintings ready to present at Gallery 10 in Sutter Creek, California. The gallery asked that I show my animal and landscape paintings. With the reception being just a few days away I am starting to feel the excitement of seeing a gathered group of friends and meeting new patrons of the arts. I hope to have some fun photos to share while at the reception in my next post. Stay tuned as they say.

Manzanita - Ruth Andre

I live in the back country and the native manzanita bushes line the mountainside as we travel the back road to upcountry. Occasionally I see truckloads of cut manzanita being hauled away. It must be going to a wholesaler that may sell to craft outlets or florists. The red bark is beautiful and and the leaf colors are the palette of old California, muted and desert like. Manzanita seems to be quite tolerant of granite and rocky soils  and can survive with little water. The deer leave it alone and that is really saying something since they want to eat everything they can on our small ranch. Last night a momma deer and her twin fawns found the hay wagon and took on loosening the tarp and having a feast. Hay is close to $20 a bale and each of our horses eats one bale a week. When we lived on our farm in Missouri we had a 20 acre fescue pasture just for the horses. Our hay bill was quite low but here in California with only five acres and just two horses the expense shines each year on the tax form. Our accountant reminds of the animal care costs. We do love our horses.

The week-end was really busy with a trip to see friends at their ceramic studio sale Then a fun time was had visiting with friends for lunch at our home. There was also a trip to the framer to pick up a few recently framed paintings. When I saw the paintings it made me think how a painting changes as we paint and then when it is completed and finally when the painting has been surrounded with a frame. The frame gives the painting a safe harbor and can be viewed unobstructed from its surroundings. I love the transformation and am enjoying seeing these two paintings finally completed.

This painting is another old oak tree that lies west of my home in the fence line. The old fence posts are standing this way and that. They are old and are made by hand cut wood. At this time of year the oaks are dark against the golden hills that surround the valley. The colors are softened but still bold grey-blues and dark purples. I love the contrast between the dark trees and the sunlit land. It has been,

I am posting another front porch plein air painting today. My camera went wild on me so I do not have a good photo of the Russian easel as promised but I will get a photo and share it soon. I love just walking out my front door to paint. The location for this painting is just down the road heading east to our neighbor's ranch. Our neighbor raises cattle so we see her cows everyday. I love watching the herd as they move from pasture to pasture. I have at least one or two more front porch paintings to paint and am looking forward to getting out the door tomorrow morning. Sea Bluff - Ruth Andre

This past week I had the opportunity to travel to Fort Bragg, California. I met up with a group of artists and painted the beautiful vistas available along the sea coast. The weather was just about perfect except for a couple of days with high wind that buffeted our easels and made for some interesting brush work at times. This painting, "Sea Bluff" was painted in Mendocino right across from the old town shops. Mendocino was bustling with tourists visiting the shops and strolling down to the bluff's edge to see the coastal waters as the waves pounded the rocky coast. It felt so good to paint plein air and enjoy the sounds of the sea. The day made me grateful for, "A Painting Day".

The Shadow of the Mountain - Ruth Andre

The grasses in the valley are so pale and dry they look almost white. As the sun starts to set the mountain sides are shadowed. The contrast is amazing. I feel as if I am painting to find my way and most likely will continue painting small studies to use as a guide for the next step to follow. I feel good and totally frustrated all in one. I know that may not make sense because it does not to me either. All I know it has been, "A Painting Day".

Shadowed Mountain - Ruth Andre

The painting today, "Shadowed Mountain" is another small color study. The composition is simple but intense. As a child growing up in Rainbow Valley, California I could see Rainbow Peak everyday as it was the center of the valley. One summer I hiked to the top of the peak and the view was quite spectacular. This mountain was a part of me.Seeing the surrounding mountains as the day comes to an end has made for, "A Painting Day".

Hidden In Silence - Ruth Andre

Living in California lets me leave the foothills on occasion and enjoy visiting the beautiful coast. It is always a gift to my senses to feel the sea air and take in the glimmering light of the coastal vistas. Forest Canopy - Ruth Andre

Today was a plein air painting day with friends, Julie Trail, Bruce Hancock and Howard Rees. We were at the Mokelumne River just 30 minutes from home. The river was gorgeous but I concentrated on the forest canopy and the beautiful greens and blues reflecting from the river's edge. We all had a lot of fun enjoying the rushing river, visiting and painting. It was, "A Painting Day".

Pink Mist - Ruth Andre

I received an interesting request and it is to paint two 6x8 paintings for a grouping to go with a painting previously purchased by a patron. Dana said her painting, "Lupin" looked lonely and she wanted to group three paintings together. Dana chose 3 of my paintings and asked if I could paint two of them in the new 6x8 inch format. I loved the challenge and went to work revisiting "Pink Rain Clouds". The second painting maybe slightly more vibrant but the pink misty feeling is still there. Taking the challenge has made for, "A Painting Day".

Aspen Holiday - Ruth Andre

As I set in my office looking out on the horses and the tree line following the creek I can see two deer moving quickly to the horse corral and scooting in with my oldest mare, Mystery. The deer seem to be accepted by the horses. None of them seem to care that two wild deer are sharing their dinner. I am sure the deer were watching my every move and were just waiting for me to leave the corral and walk to the house. It makes me wonder what else is just out of sight, hidden by the canopy of wild blackberries and old oaks. The painting today is a small forest of Aspen trees and they remind me of where I would like to visit sometime soon. Thinking of an Aspen Holiday has made for, "A Painting Day".
