"Wakamatsu Oak"

"Wakamatsu Oak"
8"x8" Oil on Canvas
by Ruth Andre
$125

I drove to a beautiful area outside of Placerville, CA yesterday to meet up with a group of painters. We met at the Wakamatsu Ranch. The ranch is rich in history and is being preserved. You can read about the ranch Here. The old oak in the painting was hovering above a small pond. Its tree limbs went all the way to the ground giving shelter for wildlife in the area. It was a beautiful cool day with gusts of wind that sent my hat flying a few times.
I just received an assignment for 40 small paintings on paper that are due as soon as possible so I will be in the studio working. The landscape will be there to see but not painted for a few weeks.
It was, "A Painting Day".

Three Oaks - Ruth Andre

Today I am in my own backyard painting the oak trees that surround my property here in the foothills. I love to see a cluster of oaks standing together. As I look out my studio window I can see a line of oaks at the creek's edge that have surely been growing there for over one hundred years. They are part of the land's history and have weathered many a sunny day and raging storm.  Taking cover under the old oaks has made for "A Painting Day"

Fall Shimmer - Ruth Andre

The winds have come and gone this past week and the leaves on this old oak are striving to hang on for another day.  The oak tree was shimmering in the sunlight while I did my best to capture its beauty with my brushes and paints.  Being with nature made for, "A Painting Day".

Chance of Rain

I have been fascinated with the palette knife and while I paint my recent rquested commission for three pigs for a rancher in Texas,  I will add another plein air landscape called "Chance of Rain".  There is something magical about working with the palette knife and a thick helping of paint.  Fall is here on our little Sutter Creek ranch in the foothills .  The old oaks are dropping acorns and and dusting the pasture with leaves.  It is a lovely time of year and makes for, "A Painting Day".

Hill Side Oaks

This is a story that may amuse you and inspire you as well.  When I first moved to California from Missouri I set up my painting gear in the barn.  We were in the process of getting plans together to build a house so the barn was fine for painting until the cold days of winter set in.  I was desperate to paint but where was the question?  Then I saw the horse trailer and thought it might work out as a warm dry spot to paint and moved in.  Yes,  a horse trailer became my studio and it was a super studio while I waited for a real studio to be built.  So if you ever complain about not having a place to paint think of me in a two horse slant horse trailer.  I look back and think of it as a fun time and painting in a horse trailer made for many, "A Painting Day".

May Calendar

May is here and the green-green hills of winter and spring are just now turning to a golden hue.  It won't be long and the hills will be full of light with the sea of grasses making the oak trees dark silhouettes.  This is a favorite time of year and I hope you will enjoy the May Calendar.  I am off for, "A Painting Day".

Gold Country Oak

I lived in the flat lands of Southeast Missouri for 12 years and when my husband and I moved back to California we chose to move to the northern part of the state.  We are in what is called the "Gold Country" due to the Gold Rush started right here at Sutter's Mill.  The change of scenery is amazing from the flat lands to the hills and mountains that reach high into the sky.  There are also rocks here and lots of them, a big no-no for farm land.  Here the land is cattle country and during those early years rocks were stacked and stacked upon one another to form fencing to hold the cattle and horses that must of roamed the hills but were corralled to certain owned acreage with miles and miles of rock fencing.  The rock fences stand today and they are really works of art with natures colorful beauty shining through.  Traveling the hills of Sutter Creek made for, "A Painting Day".
