We had a terrific storm move through the valley. Thunder could be herd rumbling in the distance. The thundering sounds continued for hours becoming louder as the storm approached. The overcast sky and brisk winds encouraged the feeling of an adventure. My studio is small with a metal roof and I savored the eclectic weather day. Today's painting, "Distant Thunder" is the first of a few storm paintings that will be posted in the next coming days.

A Painting Day - The Red Barn - Ruth Andre

The red metal barn on our property is a guide post for travelers that come out our way. I hear people say it is just a mile after the red barn or turn left after passing the red barn. While we were in Missouri we would tell people how to get to town and one directive was to turn left when you see the 5 horses. Road marks change over the years and it is like a new land is created. I am enjoying painting this Challenge 100 Series of paintings. For some reason this painting really caught my eye. There were several changes and an almost will to stop painting but in the end I continued. The painting feels quiet and lively, a nice combination. Challenge Painting Thirteen.

A Painting Day - Vanishing Creek II" - Ruth Andre

Challenge Painting Eleven

This is a second look at the creek as the water flow starts to slow on its journey through the valley. More rocks can now be seen and small bushes have come out of hiding. It is a time of transition and there is a sadness that another season has passed by. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Vanishing Creek - Ruth Andre

Challenge Painting Ten

Our creek, the Rancheria Creek, that flows through the valley is seasonal. The creek flows through June and then it is still and finally is swallowed by the blanket of sand. As I walked along the bridge across the creek I could still see a trickle of water flowing through the moss covered rocks and grasses but it had slowed and sounded sleepy. The painting today is my interruption of the quiet creek. It was,
"A Painting Day".

Challenge Painting Nine

Once the spring rains have passed and the morning dew has dried the sandy dirt road becomes quite dusty making a sand storm when cars drive by. This like the seasons is part of living in the back country. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Mountain Shadow - Ruth Andre

"Mountain Shadow"

Challenge Painting Eight

The view from my front windows is of a very tall mountain. The oak trees line the base of the mountain  and then the evergreen pines cover the mountain side leaving the valley to what is called "up country". The mountain shadow is sometimes cooling and at other times it is very cold depending upon the season. I miss the long hours of sun in winter. The mountain is strong and an old friend that I meet as I make my way through the day. It has been, "A Painting Day".

A Painting Day - Cloudy Day I - Ruth Andre

"Cloudy Day I"

Challenge Painting Six

Spring has been unusually cool this year. The days have been just lovely often overcast  and cloudy bringing a few unexpected rain showers our way. Walking to my studio often sets my mind in motion for what I want to paint that day. The valley is alive with its own constant change of motion. The valley breathes its own air as the wind flows through touching everything as it passes. Living tucked away in the back country gives way to see and feel the quiet of the valley. Life in the valley has made for,
"A Painting Day".

I will be showing these new Paint on Paper Paintings with mats and frames soon. A trip to the framer to pick up beautifully hand cut mats and professionally made frames should be coming at the end of this week. I am looking forward to see these little wisps of paint in a proper format.

A Painting Day - Fences - Ruth Andre

"Fences"
4.5"x4.5" oil & cold wax on paper
by Ruth Andre
Challenge Painting Five

The valley where I live is cow country. I have learned over the years how important fences are to the rancher with cows. The herd is not safe without strong fencing. I have also learned that keeping the fences in service takes diligence and work. Watching in the distance out my dining room window one day I saw a huge black Angus Bull walk right through what looked like a good fence. He ducked his head between the top wire and then pushed the bottom fencing down as he walked from field to the dirt road. I am sure he was a gentle guy but there is no way I would want to meet up with him on the road via car or on foot. He was a big fellow. My neighbor has been ranching in the valley for 40 years and she works hard to keep her ranch in shape. The painting above, "Fencing" was inspired by walking the fence line on my daily walks up into the hills behind our home. Enjoy Challenge Painting Five.
